Trouble getting USB Networking working on newly jailbroken Kindle Scribe

It's been a couple years since I've done this.

I have USB Network installed, but trying to ping 192.168.15.244 while status is "USBNEtwork: enabled (usbnet, sshd up)" is just yielding:

"192.168.15.244 ssh: connect to host 192.168.15.244 port 22: Operation timed out"

I have a Mac this time around so not sure how to massage these two friends into working together.

EDIT: Got it connected, apparently need to set the network interface to 192.168.15.201 first on the Mac side. That's the part I was missing. I really should have taken that networking class in college :\.

Next question(s):

1) Is it UNSAFE to allow ssh over wifi?
2) is it UNSAFE to enable ssh on boot?
3) I'm not sure what security there is in the ssh'ing as I didn't have to copy a key first. What is the accepted best practice here?

1. Nope, as it disables passwordless logins, making it require a sane authentication method (i.e., key pair).

2. Nope. (But on a mildly related tangent, booting a kindle while plugged in has always and still does lead to funky stuff).

3. Setup key pair auth before you tweak any USBNet settings.

I think I'm locked out of ssh and usbnetwork now. I posted a new thread about it; I feel so fricking stupid.
