My favorite totally bonkers Star Trek novel Black Firewas published by Pocket Books. I still own my second-hand copy just for the delightful description of Spock the Romantic Pirate. (Here is a decent review https://nashvillebookworm.wordpress....-sonni-cooper/ )

How Much For Just The Planet? was also pretty bonkers.

Quote:
Captain Kirk had an expression of mingled awe and bewilderment; Dr. McCoy’s eyebrows were hanging off the clouds.

“Gilbert and Sullivan,” all three of the singers chorused, and bowed slightly to the captain.

“Yes, of course,” Ambassador Sanchez said, sounding not entirely certain. “You’re right. If these people’s culture calls for them to, uh, burst into song occasionally … then we must respect the custom.”

More than a year ago, a review made me want to read a book, but I found that author only sold her books on Amazon, and I don't buy from there. I emailed her and asked about other sellers, she answered that she had no current plans to extend beyond Amazon (because it felt like too much work/hassle/difficulty to be worth it). I registered for her newsletter just in case.

In her latest newsletter she wrote that she's hired an assistant and that her books are now appearing elsewhere! So now Bezos' market dominance is a tiny bit smaller, and I can read a book I'm curious about

A fanfic description that made me laugh:

Quite prefer it over the 50000 blurbs and awards.

While waiting for a medical appointment reading a piece of literature that suddenly takes a... naughty turn. Or, as I later put it to a friend, "don't read smutty Kirk/Spock fanfics in the waiting room or you might have people wondering why you're giggling like a 12-year-old."

I love eReaders.

I'm reading the Xenogenesis trilogy by Octavia Butler, written in the 80's. It's... weird. The premise is basically "after a catastrophic nuclear war the survivors have sex with tentacled aliens and bear hybrid babies". Which sounds like bad porn or pure horror, but the books are actually perfectly serious science fiction (well, social and psychological SF, not sciency SF) and pretty good besides, with fascinating aliens. I'm really enjoying it. But yeah... it's weird.

Kinda love that the sentence makes me question if 'bear' is a noun or verb. Bear aliens wouln't be too out there with that premise.
