Collection column in Calibre

I'm sure this has been asked, but I can't find it. I know Calibre doesn't manage my collections on my Kindle Keyboard without a plugin, but I'm wondering why a few of my ebooks have an entry in the Collection column in Device View while most are blank.

Calibre reads your device and found a device created collection

calibre only supports reading collections for non Amazon files on the Kindle.

I'm still a bit confused. I have almost all my ebooks in collections on my kindle, and around half are not from Amazon (50 or so). If it reads collections on non-Amazon books, why only a few instead of 50? By the way, Calibre rocks. I'm just trying to learn how things work and why.

The Kindle keys collections of ASINs when they are available in the book, otherwise it uses paths. calibre only supports the paths. Since Amazon have decided to completely remove the ability to read/modify collection over a USB connection in newer devices, this functionality is end-of-lifed.
