Back when I started here, I had an Astak EZReader ($200).
I priced the screen $80 Not installed or Calibrated (there is some adjustment inside that was needed to match the display). That was the older e-ink.

From iFixit, the kit with the display, frame and tools is $99.99 US ($122.99 Cdn). I would recommend spending the extra $5 US/$6 Cdn to purchase the tools with the display/frame unless you happen to have a decent collection of tools around. Just picking up a Phillips #00, Torx T3 and Torx T5 bits locally would cost me more than the whole tool package.

Considerably more than any case I've purchased for an ereader.

Well that's just it. In the cenario descibed having a cover makes no difference, because covers do not automatically and always fall shut when you fall asleep and loose hold of your reader. At least none of my covers ever miraculously closed, when I fell asleep reading, hence the joke I made.

I am not even sure if a slim case cover would rescue a reader when one pokes their elbow into it, while getting up. My cover didn't rescue the display in my bag when I took a tumble.

A cover might help, but there is no guarantee.

I don't have an Era. But I do have a Libra 2 which is a similar design. I've had/have a number of Readers all better in a case then not. That includes Sony, Kobo, and Kindle.

A cover won't provide 100% protection. But it does provide some protection and it makes it easier to hold the Reader and you have the benefit of sleep/wake so you don't wear out the power button.

It makes it easier to hold for YOU. Not for me or many other people.

I liked a cover/case when eink ereaders didn't have front lights; I used the cover for a clipon light. I don't use, need, or want a cover/case.

These posts do seem to go off the rails fairly often. Back to the main topic:

I received my Colorsoft even though UPS took a week to deliver from Texas to Utah. I like it fine. I would prefer page turn buttons, but I chose a flush screen and Send to Kindle over the Libra Colour. The Colorsoft is not as slick as the PW4 but I ordered the clear case anyway. I got the one with the magsafe ring from CoBak. It fits nicely and keeps me from accidentally pushing the on/off button. It does work with my iPhone charger. It is grippy enough that I don't need a popsocket, but I have one anyway just in case.

With no screen protection, I need to be extra careful to keep it out of the reach of my macaw. If I decide to take it out of the house, I might order the Amazon Fabric case that I have always liked.

For myself, I very seldom use an ereader without a case. I find the extra thickness and grip the case offers to make them more comfortable to hold. When I want to place the ereader on a table, the origami cases I prefer save me from hunting for something to lean it against.

OTOH, I do know people who do not read with their ereader in a case since they find it more comfortable/lighter to hold without the case. OYAH, most of them have a case/sleeve/whatever to put the ereader in for transport.

Your ereader, your money, your choice no matter how foolhardy it may appear to be to me.
