Google targeting iTunes, analyst claims

The rumor mill has officially been kicked into high gear now, with Forbes citing Bear Stearns analyst Robert Peck (conservative guy, just recently upgraded Google from hold to buy - when the stock already performed over 300 percent) in reporting that Google "is in the midst of creating its own iTunes competitor." What the analyst dubbed "Google Tunes" could be rolled-out as beta (we didn't expect anything else from Google) within three to six months. We are open for suggestions how Google could make iTunes better.

Some more "evidence" here:

A good place to start on the quest for a Google music player is Google Video Player. A product similar to this for music could be called "Google Music Player", so that was where I started.
Looks like Google leaves some traces in the header that could point at an upcoming music player.

Maybe Google's music player will be web based and make it possible to hear your music streaming from any online computer and sync your music player from any same computer?

If their iTunes killer is anything like Google video, Apple has nothing to worry about.

If rumors of Microsoft getting into the mp3 player business are to be believed, that could cause the iPod some headaches...because "PlaysForSure" (learn to use spaces, Redmond!) could become a reality this time.

And don't forget Yahoo:

Yahoo and Linksys hit it hard yesterday, introducing a product that will stream music from your computer to your stereo for just $99. Called the Linksys Wireless-G Music Bridge, it’s being marketed to go with Yahoo’s digital music download service.
