I see new commands with the word "alias". Does it have a literal meaning? Is it something like "nickname"?

Nope.

It is related to the new terminal plugin.

In the terminal you can have "virtual" commands that do some work.

For instance you can have a command "ddmesg" that does "dmesg | less". In that case "ddmesg" is an alias.

If you're not sure about the translation in your language please do a google search about "bash" "alias" .

It is also totally ok to leave that string untranslated. You won't see it anywhere outside that specific plugin.

It's an EPUB feature, see https://github.com/koreader/koreader/issues/6809

In short it's kind of like an appendix or something in a regular book, except because it's an ebook it's "non-linear". It's not very clear to me what it's good for tbh.

They're files (~ chapters, sections, portions) inside the book that may be skipped when just paging forward/backward. "May", because that's up to the reading application to implement or ignore. The content in those files is still accessible, possibly through hyperlinks, or the TOC. Typical use case are (book- or chapter-) endnotes. You want to be able to see the notes when you so decide, but you probably don't want to page through 10 pages of bibliography references after every chapter.

The "Hide non-linear fragments" option does that. If the books has any such "fragment", it will hide them from normal page forward/backward (and total page count).

I'd swear I left a scathing review of this edition of Speech and Language Processing because the publisher thought the 10 pages of bibliography references at the end of every chapter were non-linear content that could be skipped.

(I either didn't bother or they deleted it… but tl;dr do not buy that edition.)

I'm trying to update Czech translation and here are a few strings I need help with:
  1. Quote:
In CRE documents, an alternative status bar can be displayed at the top of the screen, with or without the regular bottom status bar.

Enabling this alt status bar, per document or by default, can be done in the bottom menu.

The alternative status bar can be configured here.
    Here: https://github.com/koreader/koreader...tener.lua#L173

I'm not sure what are CRE documents?
  2. Quote:
    "%1"
is not a valid image file!
A valid fallback image is required in Cover-Image.
    Here:
    https://github.com/koreader/koreader.../main.lua#L100

In this case I don't know what is Cover-Image? I didn't find it in any other language string. Is it name of some folder in KOReader's installation?

1. Good question since the average user will be equally puzzled, though I'm not immediately sure how to make that any clearer.

CRE stands for crengine, as in coolreader engine, see here for the technical mumbo jumbo. That's used by default for filetypes like FB2, EPUB, HTML and a few others. Simply put most formats other than PDF and DjVu.

(If you long-press on a file you can also select MuPDF to render some of those; support for that is currently very proof of concept.)

2. Cover-Image is probably a typo that should be "Cover image". It's a plugin: https://github.com/koreader/koreader...meta.lua#L4-L5

What about using reflowable and fixed layout documents. I think it's already used in bottom menu.

Possibly, but as stated above that would be inaccurate.

What exactly are "hardware dithering" and "software dithering"? Are they related to color rendering?

Signal processing jargon .

Here, means the computer doing maths things to pixels forced into a restricted color palette (here, 16 shades of grey) in order to trick your brain into making it look not like utter garbage .

Handled & accelerated by the hardware on the one hand, left in the hands of the CPU on the other.

Let me ask you: What colour do the highlights have in colour devices when the highlight type is set to "Lighten"?
The question may seems a little bit strange, but the answer will help me with the translation.

Thanks!

I'd assume the same, the entire UI is designed for grayscale eInk devices .
