Dead God of Holdrege Valley: A Lovecraftian Cosmic Horror Novel
by R.P. Wood
FREE Amazon US

Unimaginable horror and intrigue overtake a man tracking the last known whereabouts of his best friend.

Brandon Caulfield, esteemed traveling journalist for the Washington Chronicle has gone missing while on assignment in sleepy Holdrege Valley. In a picturesque former mining town lying in the shadow of Virginia’s highest mountain peak, Sawyer Blacklock must search out and find what has happened to his best friend. Sawyer seems to be the only one who has pieced together that Brandon is in trouble...

The peaceful town of Holdrege Valley is not at all what it seems, however. Along with a kind-hearted innkeeper, Sawyer must contend with unexplainable and indescribable phenomenon that seem to plague his search. As more of the puzzle is uncovered, Sawyer runs across and must delve into the inner machinations of a strange religious cult that has swept into the Valley. A shadowy group of zealots have seemingly infiltrated the inner workings of Holdrege Valley for their own divine purpose.

Will the world bear witness to the rebirth of the DEAD GOD OF HOLDREGE VALLEY?

The Intruders by Michael Marshall Smith is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Now a BBC America original television show by the writer and executive producer of The X-Files!

For ex-cop Jack Whalen, it all begins with a visit from a childhood friend, a lawyer who needs Jack's help. The family of a noted scientist has been senselessly, brutally murdered, and the scientist is nowhere to be found.

But Jack has more pressing concerns. The past that drove him from the L.A.P.D. continues to haunt him. And his wife has disappeared during a routine business trip to Seattle. She never checked into her hotel. She isn't answering her cell phone. She is gone.

A third missing person, a little girl from Oregon, is found miles away. But it soon becomes obvious that she is not an innocent victim … and far from defenseless.

Something very strange is happening—a perplexing series of troubling events that's leading Jack Whalen into the shadows. And the secrets buried there are unlike anything he, or anyone, could possibly have imagined.

[Post #916] Ya can't go wrong with a good carnage novel dealing with elder gods who possibly have a personal hygiene issue. Yep, gotta love those persevering Cthulhu entities as they suffer defeat after defeat after defeat.

Got it.

Thank you!

Something’s Alive on the Titanic by Robert J Serling is $0.99 at Amazon US.

Published in 1990 by Rod Serling's older brother. I've wanted to read it for years, based on the title alone.

Quote:
Something is alive on the Titanic — something powerful and malevolent that protects the once-great ocean liner from the rapacious intentions of those who would desecrate her grave. Whatever is down there was first encountered by a classified mission in 1975, and they could never speak of it.

A previous mission to recover millions of dollars in gold believed hidden in Cargo Hold Three had a mysterious, tragic end. Now, a new group of men and women — scientists, adventurers, and the United States Navy — wants to retrace the steps of that original voyage to investigate where the 1975 mission failed. The rumours of monsters and apparitions can’t be true, can they? As they penetrate deep into the hull, the first people to see the interior in eighty-one years, they find they are not alone…

The Doom That Came to Dunwich: Selected Stories of Lovecraftian Mystery - Richard A Lupoff

Currently free from Endeavour Venture. It's been on offer before but hasn't been mentioned in the Horror thread.

amazon.co.uk | amazon.com | amazon.ca

Quote:
"Did you know that DNA extracted from a laboratory mouse and injected into the cells of a common fruit fly has produced eyes on the legs of that fly? Eyes, young miss, eyes. Think of what you’ve just read.”

Lovecraftian stories are the bread and butter of the true horror fan.

During his lifetime, Lovecraft himself encouraged other writers to develop stories in the vein we now call Lovecraftian: horror, based around the idea that Earth had been colonized by malign aliens in the remote past, long before mankind arose and became civilized, who eventually became worshipped and feared as evil Gods by their human servitors.

Eventually these aliens had been “banished” to another dimensional limbo by a benign Elder Race, but might one day return to reclaim the Earth “when the stars are right.”

That deep seated unease threads through this collection of Richard. A Lupoff's short stories that seem to share a common universe.

Thanks for that. I had previously picked the book up, but I guess I forgot to share.

Crooked House by Joe McKinney is $0.99 at Amazon US.

The synopsis could use work and the font on the cover is kinda hokey, but I've enjoyed Joe McKinney's other work.

Quote:
In this republican country, amid the fluctuating waves of our social life, somebody is always at the drowning point.

Those words were true when Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote them in 1851, and they were true in 1933, when a fire burned half of Crook House to the ground, taking James Crook’s wife and two sons with it. A disgraced bootlegger and former pro baseball player, James Crook returned from prison to find his house, and his life, a pile of cinders. Broken and insane, he rebuilt Crook House, putting his pain and loneliness into every timber.

But Hawthorne’s words are still true today, and nobody knows that better than Dr. Robert Bell, who has just moved into Crook House as part of his hiring package from a small Texas college. He soon discovers that Crook House is more than just a new beginning for himself and Sarah and their daughter Angela. For the Bell family, Crook House is a place where the past still lives, and its horrors waiting for the next drowning man.

Jack Quaid's The Last Final Girl trilogy is on sale, $0.99 a piece.

The covers are really what grabbed me here. The reviews are fair to middlin' and I'm not sure a human hunting monsters really counts as horror.

Quote:
From Book 1: Stephen King meets Quentin Tarantino

At the end of every horror movie, one girl always survives the deadly slasher… In this case, Parker Ames not only survives, she turns the tables and dedicates her life to hunting and destroying the monsters that stalk slumber parties and campsites all across the country.

Ten years after the horrific events known as the Massacre at Coffin Bay, Parker’s world has been flipped totally upside down. She’s no longer the nerdy teenage girl who would run and hide from the things that go bump in the night. Now Parker is the thing that goes bump in the night.

After years of traveling the country and hunting some of the world’s most dangerous slashers, Parker returns home when she hears that Hurricane Williams, the deranged slasher who slaughtered her family, has resurfaced and continued his killing spree. Armed with her trusty chain saw, affectionately named Aerosmith, she sets out on a path of revenge and redemption.

If you love 80s horror movies and killer books like My Best Friend’s Exorcism, you’ll love Escape from Happydale.

Shallow Graves by Patrick Logan is $0.99 at Amazon US.

I picked this one p a while ago, but haven't read it yet. (Maybe I should make 2020 The Year of Horror and really start chopping down my TBR list.)

Quote:
Not all houses are made of brick and stone...
Robert Watts is having the worst day of his entire life: first he's laid off, then he finds out that his wife is having an affair... with his boss no less. And that's only the beginning.

Before the month is out, Robert finds himself alone to raise his daughter with no money, no job, and a house that is minutes from being repossessed. Just when he hits rock bottom, a strange visitor arrives at the doorstep of his soon to be foreclosed house with a letter from an Aunt he didn't know existed.

The offer is simple: look after Aunt Ruth during her dying days, and in return Robert will be bequeathed the Harlop Estate in which she currently resides. It's a no brainer and Robert jumps at the opportunity, equally motivated by the prospect of financial security as he is for a fresh start.

Problem is, it only takes a few nights in the Harlop Estate before he begins to question Aunt Ruth's claims that they are the home's only inhabitants...

It's the scratching he hears during the night, the voices that he can barely make out over the constant rain, and then there's the girl with the rat...

With their house foreclosed and their bank accounts liquidated, Robert and his daughter Amy desperately need a place to live. But the question Robert soon finds himself struggling with is whether living in the Harlop Estate is worth it... and if he can survive until Aunt Ruth passes to collect his inheritance.

They Came with the Snow by Christopher Coleman is FREE at Amazon.

This is a compilation of the first book and a sequel. I have the first book (back when it was a standalone). I don't like horror book series. But hey, it's free.

Quote:
The fight for survival started with a blast.

Then it started snowing in May and the grid failed.

Then they came.

Who are they? And what do they want?

When a mysterious blast goes off in a small college town, triggering a blizzard, college professor Dominic and the few remaining survivors must decide whether to stay or leave and face the monsters who came with the snow.

Missed it. I don't think I've come across Horror book series in my reading. Austin Crawley's Holiday Tales series is stand alone books, connected only by the title format.

The Plasm by William Meikle is $0.99 at Amazon US.

From the reviews, it's a three star good, not great book. But it has ingredients I love. A haunted (space)ship and Lovecraftian monsters.

Quote:
The Vordlak, once the pride of the space program, has been missing for decades, thought lost in the void. But when a salvage team come across it floating in the darkness, and the lost ship's unique drive kicks in, then the problems are only just beginning. Space and time are warped as some of the relics of the original mission develop a strange new life of their own in their storage chamber deep below Mars.

Soon it is a race against time, as a burgeoning plasma starts to feed and grow on Mars, and matters aboard the Vordlak come to a head. Disaster can only be averted by studying the secret history of the ghost ship and the ancient rituals that have provided it with its power. But in repeating that history, will the small band of survivors prevail - or will they only make matters worse as the plasma continues to rampage?
