Exclusive: meet the Amazon Kindle with 'Paperwhite' backlit display
"Along with one or more new Kindle Fires, we're expecting refreshed E Ink models in Amazon's e-reader line at the company's Los Angeles event next week as well. One of those appears to be a refreshed Kindle Touch — the button below the display is gone, and the bezel has changed from light to very dark gray. The overall shape of the product and the location of the USB port and power switch appear to be essentially unchanged. From the images we have, it looks like Amazon will be touting the unit with "higher contrast, high resolution, integrated lighting, and eight weeks of battery life," even when using the light. The retail name for this unit is unclear — Amazon could simply call it the Kindle Touch again, but "Paperwhite" might factor in as well."

That Kindle is not possible to exist. You cannot have a backlit eink display.

That looks pretty nice. Can't wait to get all of the details and hear some reviews about it.

I think writer of the article just doesn't know the difference between front-lit and back-lit. A common mistake. The (French) writing on the actual image doesn't say back-lit, it says "light source" or something like that.
Also notice it says (per The Verge's translation): "higher contrast, high resolution." I take this to mean better contrast, but the same resolution as before (otherwise it would have said "higher contrast, higher resolution"). I wonder if the "higher contrast" is with the light on or off, as the Nook with Glow suffers from complaints about worse contrast with the light off. Or probably "higher contrast" means a whiter screen. Hence "paperwhite:" again, do they mean it looks white as paper with the light on or off? People have said that the newest Sony also looks to have a whiter screen. It seems like e-ink screens (all the same Pearl ones) have had a lot of variance in whiteness, maybe they have finally tightened up the manufacturing to get "only the white ones" out there? eP |

This is what I've been waiting for to maybe upgrade my K3 Keyboard. The existing touch didn't excite me enough, but integrated lighting and higher contrast may well push me over the edge.

If this is true - no page turn buttons - then I'm staying with my K3 or I will buy a Nook instead.

Whose to say there aren't any buttons set into the sides? No one will know for sure until Tuesday. It looks great, and I may be unable to resist. Can't wait for Tuesday!

The reason for that was that we don't like to split discussions across multiple forums, so the earliest thread that was created "wins". This one was a few hours before yours.
