Chris Behrsin's A Cat's Guide to Bonding with Dragons was free a while back, and it looked kind of fun, and I'm not above reading a YA title now and then, and so I grabbed it and read it and enjoyed it. I then got distracted by some other books in my TBR pile, so I didn't read any more in the series, but I did put Behrsin in my eReaderIQ list, and now the first book is free again, and the next two books in the series are on sale for $0.99/£0.99 at Kindle US/UK. (They are also in KU, if you have that.) Cat's Guide reminded me a little bit of Helen Harper's Slouch Witch series, even though that's an unusual comparison for a YA title...

Shortly after a fall-out with her best friend, sixth grader Miranda starts receiving mysterious notes, and she doesn’t know what to do. The notes tell her that she must write a letter—a true story, and that she can’t share her mission with anyone.

It would be easy to ignore the strange messages, except that whoever is leaving them has an uncanny ability to predict the future. If that is the case, then Miranda has a big problem—because the notes tell her that someone is going to die, and she might be too late to stop it.

Today's Big Deal at Kindle UK is six (only six ) Horrible Histories by Terry Deary. A few are duplicates of the sale from before - or at least, I already had a couple. But some weren't - or at least, I hadn't bought before.

Somewhere we still have a pile of these in our garage. These are the series with wonderful titles like Measly Middle Ages, Vicious Vikings, Smashing Saxons, and (my favorite) Groovy Greeks. And £1.29 is a good price - they are normally £4-ish, and usually go on sale for £1.90, not £1.29...

My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George was, per Wikipedia, a 1960 Newbery Honor Award winner. (Wikipedia indicates this means it was a runner-up.) And among the bazillions of books I've read I still remember this one quite vividly from when I was young. Oh, and in a vividly positive way ...I guess one could also remember a book vividly for how bad it was, and as I think about it, I do recall a few of those too...

My Side is on sale right now in the US for $2.99.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07R9WWH3V
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/my-...the-mountain-4

Spoiler:
Quote:
Sam Gribley is terribly unhappy living in New York City with his family, so he runs away to the Catskill Mountains to live in the woods—all by himself. With only a penknife, a ball of cord, forty dollars, and some flint and steel, he intends to survive on his own. Sam learns about courage, danger, and independence during his year in the wilderness, a year that changes his life forever.

I just got an email from Amazon US that you can get a Kindle Kid's book for free from now through August 15, as part of their "Back to school is cool" offer. There's a limited list of 12 books, and you can see them here: https://www.amazon.com/b?node=116097242011

Here are the T&Cs:

Spoiler:
Back to School: Offer Terms & Conditions
• Offer only applies to select Kindle book titles sold and delivered through Amazon.com
• Offer expires at 11:59 p.m. (PDT) on Aug 15, 2023.
• You will receive an e-mail from Amazon confirming that the promotional credit has been applied to your customer account and instructions on how to redeem the promotional credit.
• The promotional credit will be credited to your account within 7 days of initial qualifying purchase and, once credited, will be automatically applied to your next qualifying purchase. The promotional credit can be viewed in your order summary after you place an order for an eligible book.
• The maximum benefit you may receive from this offer is $4.99 to be used for a qualifying purchase on one eligible Kindle book.
• The promotional credit expires at 11:59 p.m. (PDT) on Aug 15, 2023.
• Offer can only apply to 1 unit in a bulk order purchase.
• Purchaser will be responsible for the final price of the Kindle book after discount, plus applicable taxes.
• Redemption of this offer requires an Amazon.com account and acceptance of the Amazon Kindle Store Terms of Use.
• Offer does not apply to physical goods, digital magazines, audiobooks (including Audible companions for your Kindle eBook purchase), print books, Amazon Gift Cards, or digital subscriptions such as Kindle Unlimited.
• Digital content and services may only be available to customers located in the U.S. and are subject to the terms and conditions of Amazon Digital Services LLC.
• Offer limited to one per customer and account.
• Offer may not be combined with other offers.
• Amazon reserves the right to modify or cancel the offer at any time.
• Offer is non-transferable and may not be resold.
• Offer discount will be allocated proportionally among all eligible promotional items in your order.
• If any of the products or content related to this offer are returned, your refund will equal the amount you paid for the product or content, subject to applicable refund policies.
• If you violate any of these terms, the offer will be invalid. • Unless an Amazon Gift Card is the stated benefit of the promotion, promotional codes (including those placed directly in accounts) may not be redeemed for Amazon Gift Cards.

The T&Cs are actually kind of confusing and seem to be adapted from some other offer, because for me, the credit showed up right at time of purchase (I bought Sadie Sprocket Builds a Rocket, since I'm a female engineer), and there was none of this "crediting to my account within 7 days" stuff.

I'm not sure whether this was an invite-only thing, although it doesn't seem to be. But, of course, as always with Amazon, YMMV...

Newbery winner, The Door in the Wall, by Marguerite de Angeli is $1.99 in the US right now.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005LALDN2
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-door-in-the-wall-4

Spoiler:
Quote:
WINNER OF THE NEWBERY MEDAL • An uplifting story of resilience set in medieval times about a boy who learns to overcome obstacles and ultimately save the castle. This historical fiction novel is a classic for all ages!

“An enthralling and inspiring tale of triumph.” —The New York Times

Ever since he can remember, Robin, child of Sir John de Bureford, has been told what is expected of him as the son of a nobleman. He must learn the ways of knighthood. But Robin’s destiny is changed suddenly when he falls ill and loses the use of his legs. Fearing a plague, his servants abandon him, and Robin is left alone.

A monk named Brother Luke rescues Robin and takes him to the hospice of St. Mark’s, where he is taught woodcarving and patience and strength. Says Brother Luke, “Thou hast only to follow the wall far enough and there will be a door in it.”

Robin learns soon enough what Brother Luke means. When the great castle of Lindsay is in danger, Robin discovers that there is more than one way to serve his king.

A couple of books in the "Tales of Magic Series" by Edward Eager are on sale on Amazon for $1.99 each. I read Knight's Castle as a kid and shared it with my kids; they're still as great although the kids don't catch the Ivanhoe references. They work as standalones -
I didn't even realize there was a series until I was an adult.
