Hint-- not taken.

You'd think that religious people would take having their gigantic tacky styrofoam statue of Jesus struck by fracking lightning might me some sort of message. But-- they plan on rebuilding. (Now if it had struck a strip club, that would have been a sign.)

*shakes head* I just love the way organized religion that is supposed to be helping people uses monies that they browbeat out of their followers for... (gotta say it) really crappy tacky junk

I heard an interview on NPR on my way home tonight - apparently this statue was a popular sight on I-75 and drivers are clamoring for its return. Moneys apparently rolling in.

I heard the same thing, complete with really bad terminator reference.

We could start and anti-fund, for every donated dollar spent on something important... wait let me re-phrase.... for every donated dollar spent on something more tangible match it with a dollar from out fund (until we run out of money in it).

This actually reminds me of a true story back near a town where I used to live many years ago. At the Bridgewater Commons Mall, the mall operators used to put out a large animated bear during the Christmas holiday. The bear would sleep a little, then wake up and sing Christmas songs. As it turns out, several people didn't like the bear for different reasons. In truth, complaints came in from just about every group. Some Atheists wanted it taken down because they didn't like public displays of Christmas decorations. Jehovah Witnesses complained as they pointed out Dec. 25th is really a Pagan holiday. Some devout Christians complained because they said a singing bear had nothing to do with Christmas. Because they received so many different complaints, the mall operators decided to remove the bear. I'm not sure if the people that complained were right or wrong, but I do know this: there wasn't as much fun the next Christmas at the mall, wasn't as much music, and there were a lot fewer smiles. If you're asking what this has to do with a six story statue of "Touchdown Jesus," it's just a true story about a large figure that brought some smiles to those that got the opportunity to see it.

Dear friends, I have got to the stage where I am finding that any organised religion is capable of the most horrendous crimes, and still feel virtuous.

I'm just saying..........

Cheers

I do not think that the majority of Christians are that wacky. In fact, most American Christians are quiet about their beliefs and are not trying to convert the world. You got as many whack job Christians as you do insurance salesmen or any other "grouping" of man you can think of. Just part of living in a whack job world is all.

Ask a normal believer if they would build a 600 foot super jesus on the highway and see what they would say.

If I win the lottery (bit of a long shot, since I never enter the lottery) I want to buy a plot of land near that church. Not too close, maybe about a mile away. On that land, I will build a 10-story tall Flying Spaghetti Monster. posed with a giant meatbally football about to be tossed to Jesus.

(Assuming that they do rebuild.)
