That is good to know.

I regularly use PageEdit without Sigil with epubs I have saved with the FolderOut plugin or with epubs I have unzipped to make minor tweaks and then use Paul's wonderful ePub Zip/Unzip 3.0.app via drag and drop on macOS to rezip things up properly.

I hope I haven't created a flood of support issues for you.

Actually I already thought of something.

As I'm sure you know the calibre book editor's spell checker is multi-lingual. Not sure what your thoughts are regarding doing the same in Sigil - IIRC someone had a go, but nothing came of it.

However to me at least it would make more sense to have a multi-lingual spell-checker in a content editor like Page Edit than in code editors like Sigil and the calibre book-editor.

As I said, just a thought

QtWebEngine used in PageEdit requires special binary format dictionaries but once those are installed you should be able to spellcheck in multiple languages as long as the lang attribute is properly set on the right tags.

I will double check that and let you know.

Okay did some snooping and Chrome does NOT support the lang or xml:lang attribute at all.

See this bug report closed as won't fix:

https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium...tail?id=389498

That aside, they do have a "all-languages" spellcheck feature that will ignore the lang attributes as well but will check each word in all language pack dictionaries that the user installed. That way you can mix in words from more than one language and if it is correct in any of them it is considered correct.

The problem is of course then if you have both German and English dictionaries installed, it
will think that the following sentence is correct:

"He poked me in the ein."

Since "ein" is a valid word in German.

The only way around this would be completely write our own spellcheck parser that will parse each web page's DOM tree and assign a language code to each word parsed and to use that language code to decide which dictionary the word should be checked against.

This is NOT something on my to-do list for PageEdit at all.

In Sigil's CodeView, being able to support multi-language spellchecking that follows the lang attribute of a tag is not that hard.

The problem comes when you try doing spellchecking on-the-fly as someone writes/edits the code. This happens because syntax highlighting (which includes spellchecking) is handled on a line by line basis and would need to keep a stack of beginning and ending language regions that cross lines dynamically on the fly along with the fact that a single line may hold words from multiple languages.

Supporting multi-language spellchecking (via a spellchecking tool - not on the fly during dynamic editing that observes and uses the xml:lang or lang attributes *IS* still on my To-Do list for Sigil and will come sometime later.

Thanks for looking into that - as I said it was just a thought.

In Sigil, I normally have in-line spellchecking turned it off. What I would find useful, is an option that turned it on and off when the spellchecker was opened and closed.

And, drawing on my usage of multi-lingual spellchecking in Word (which is still 'wonky' Ψ³) and the calibre book editor I would like an option to check languages one at a time rather than all at once.

That would actually be a easier to do. Basically then, the parser only sends words whose lang attributes specify the language that matches the current dictionary and skips all other words not un that language.

Yeah, multi-lingual spell checking is a niche requirement; so, there is no need to make it too elaborate.

If you go down that path I suggest a selector from installed dictionaries be added to the spell checker dialogue - probably on the side with Ignore etc.

Is the Tools->Spellcheck->Highlight misspelt words menu option new, or have I missed seeing it for the past several years
