new kindle paperwhite not recognized by calibre

Hello, as suggested by kovidgoyal, after trying all hints I decided to post my debug log.
I just installed calibre 3.21 on linux mint 19 (Tara).
When I connect my kindle paperwhite via USB, the disk is automatically mounted and I can browse the files. Unmounting the device (as suggested) does not help. The kindle is not in airplane mode. I don't know the device's version, I bought it one month ago.

Version 3.21 is ancient, there's been about 70 releases since. Try installing the latest release, Linux specific instructions are on the Linux download page ==>> https://calibre-ebook.com/

Thanks a lot for your reply. I just installed the distribution's version so I ruled out that possibility. The webpage says that often the packages included in distributions are outdated.

I'll try that now.

Just checking the changelog, calibre version 3.34 has, "Support for the new Kindle Paperwhite 2018". You will need at least that version for your device.
