Page numbering for ebooks sent to Kindle
I appreciate Amazon feature of synchronizing bookmarks and notes for ebooks sent to Kindle. On the other hand, MOBI files I have uploaded via email do not have page numbering. Is it possible to add page numbers for ebooks downloaded from cloud by generating an APNX file in Calibre and saving it to Kindle in a folder with an ebook?

APNX file generating is part of the "Send to device" routine and is not otherwise accessible inside Calibre. There is/was a Calibre plugin called "APNX generator" but that plugin is out-of-date for years now (there were changes in format of apnx files).
Recently there was a thread with this exact question and someone recommended using ExtractCoverThumbs for generating apnx files (until then I did't know that that script/tool could also generated apnx files besides cover thumbnails). So you could use that as a "post-download" step. Keep in mind that the cover thumbnail part of that tool no longer works (or to be more exact newer Kindle firmware block the use of thumbnails for azw3 pdoc type files/books). The apnx files generated by it are working on PW3 with firmware 5.8.11, I've just tested it. Last edited by shamanNS; 02-17-2018 at 02:19 PM. |

I suppose you could do it by sending the book to the Kindle via USB with Calibre (which will generate the APNX file), copying the file back to your PC, deleting the book from the Kindle again, re-downloading it from the Cloud, and then copying the APNX file back again .

Nope. There would be ASIN value mismatch (IIRC apnx file contains references to book's ASIN) . And also SDR directory name mismatch (because book filename would be different and SDR directory is created to match it).

You want page numbers, you side load using Calibre. You can't have it both ways.

Nah, compared Calibre page numbers with real ones, Calibre adds around 30% of pages to paper books. Guess I'm going to stay with locations. It's a shame though books sent to cloud don't have covers - then it would be perfect with content sync.

You can designate a column to put in page numbers and have the page numbers only go that high. You tell Calibre to use that column for the page numbers and if you've put in a number, Calibre will use that.

How can I do that? And does it mean that when i specify e.g. 400 pages, Calibre will divide a book, whatever the length, to 400 pages?

What is wrong with you? You are actually making that claim despite shamanNS giving precise instructions on how to do it without Calibre only three posts above yours? Do you even read threads anymore or do you just write one out of three opinion set pieces in every thread you feel like opening?

@Buhaj47: Take a look here:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=134000 Count Pages can be used download page count data from Goodreads, or you can choose one of the algorithms for calculating a number. I use the "chars per page" algorithm (2350 characters = 1 page). You don't have to use any plugin (you can manually input desired number) , but that forum topic contains instructions & screenshots illustrating how to create custom column for storing number of pages and where to find Kindle device driver settings to tell it to use that custom column you've created. Then Calibre will create mapping that results in that number of pages. @johnyyb: Well, it's not actually without Calibre, since you're at minimum using Calibre to hyphenate the epub file, and at maximum the whole procedure (including sanding the email) can be done using Calibre. But it is without USB cable Last edited by shamanNS; 02-20-2018 at 05:34 PM. |

While your statment is correct (yes, you can't email apnx files; nor can you email KFX book that can internally contains page mapping info) that is not answering OP's question. YOU misread the OP's post. Nowhere does it state "I want to email page count" instead it"can I have page numbers for books I've emailed (& can I use Calibre to sideload page count info) ".
