ePub to mobi convert as "pure" as possible

What would the ideal Calibre conversion settings be if I wanted to convert from ePub to mobi and stay as close to the original as possible?

What about going from mobi to epub, again staying as "true" to the original source as possible?

It depends.

Mobi to ePub should be pretty good, as ePub is (almost) a superset of mobipocket coding.

Personally, I just take the defaults.

Does it have to be mobi or do your devices support azw3? Epub to azw3 is very nearly a one-to-one "true to the original" conversion.

If you want the look to be the same, MOBI ==> EPUB should work pretty well, and EPUB ==> MOBI will only support a part of what could be in the EPUB (for instance, no embedded fonts). AZW3 as stated will be pretty much equal to EPUB.

If you want the code to be the same (possibly for editing-related purposes?), do not use calibre to convert. The css will be flattened, into calibre** styles that display the same across all devices but are annoying to edit.
