Exclamation Pearl Screen (K3) Vs Touchscreen (PB302)

Simply no comparison to the contrast of pearl screen. With 400 to 500€ investment for a 902/903 model, I will definitely expect PB to think of offering pearl screen sooner than later.

Personally, I don't give much for increased contrast in the black tones, which is what Pearl seems to give. I'd like whiter whites, blacks are just fine.

I'm a hundred times more interested in the release date of plastic screens.

I own a Gen3 next to the PB302 and have to admit, I am rather disappointed with the very poor contrast, the 302's screen offers compared to the Gen3 (in my opinion the difference in reality is even bigger, then it looks on the fotos).
Seems, that the extra layer (touch) takes away a lot of the background's "whiteness". If I understood correctly, the new models will be wacom-only, when it comes to touch technology, as this can be located beneath the actual display part of the screen.

Sony will soon have Pearl and touch. So if you want Pearl and touch, get a Sony.

302 is a bad example because of the touchscreen overlay. We (PB) are working on a direct comparison between the pearl screen and the second generation vizplex screens that we are using on our new generation of readers.

Will the new larger screen PBs have no touch layer on top of the screen?

No. They have a wacom touchscreen. This is layered behind the screen.

Why can't PB use Pear screens for the new devices instead of the old Vizplex?

Because Sony and Amazon made an exclusive deal with PVI over the first months of Pearl screens, so their devices could have them.

A fairer comparison would be the new Sony Readers with Pearl and their new "improved" touchscreens to the Vizplex+wacom touchscreen. Make it an apples to apples comparison as Sony is also an Adept ePub vendor and their new touchscreen is *still* an overlay.

How do you know that Sony's new touch is still an overlay?

They said so.
"Improved" means more of the same.
They *didn't* say "new touchscreen tech", now, did they?
Marketting-speak tells you a lot by what they don't say directly.
If they were using something fancy, say infrared senors, they'd be bragging all over about the advanced Sony tech. Maybe give it a funky marketting name.
They're not.
Odds are its a thinner, better-bonded resistive layer.
Still an overlay, though, and its still going to diffract some.
Hopefully it won't be noticeable.
(Hopefully because if these readers tank there'll be one less player by next year, not because I intend to buy them. )

PCworld says that indeed they use an infrared technology: http://www.pcworld.com/article/20459...ml?tk=rel_news

Quote:
Instead, Sony uses an infrared optical technology touchscreen on each of its new models: The Reader Pocket Edition, Reader Touch Edition, and Reader Daily Edition. The touchscreen works by using infrared sensors to detect where your finger is on the screen; it compares that information against a matrix that identifies where your finger is and what action you are trying to accomplish, and then performs that action.
And from Computerworld http://www.computerworld.com/s/artic...reen_e_readers :

Quote:
According to a company representative, the increased responsiveness is due to Sony's ability to remove a glass overlay that caused the screen to be duller and less sensitive than it now is; the current displays use infrared optical technology to locate where your finger is on the screen.

yes Sony is using new "optical" infrared touch screen tech. infrared beams are projected in a layer above the display towards detectors on the opposite sides. the "touch" is detected by the fingers interference/ blocking the beam. basically a much smaller version of the beams that ring a chime in shops to let employees know when someone has come in the door.
