The literary agency representing Mr. Flynn put up the extraordinary novel Eifelheim free online as part of making available as much Hugo nominated work as possible.

Eifelheim is quite dense, but at least the medieval part is fabulous. The modern part published originally as a novella in Analog several years ago is ok.

First contact between aliens and humans in Europe 1348, with the twist that by and large the aliens are closer to our scientific mindset, though they are also different in an essential genetic way.
