Amazon: Stieg Larsson Passes 1 Million Kindle Books Sold

http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix....372&highlight=

Quote:
Amazon.com, Inc., today announced that Stieg Larsson, author of the internationally bestselling Millennium Trilogy, has become the first author to sell over 1 million Kindle books and is the first member of the new "Kindle Million Club." The "Kindle Million Club" recognizes authors whose entire body of work has sold over 1 million copies in the Kindle Store. Customers can buy the three books in Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy from the Kindle Store, and read them everywhere--on their Kindle, Kindle DX, iPhone, iPod touch, BlackBerry, PC, Mac, iPad and Android devices.
Interesting-I had read that James Patterson was the first author to sell 1 million ebooks http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/0..._n_637632.html , but no format was noted.

Quote:
James Patterson's publishing company says that he's the first author to exceed one million sales in electronic book delivery.

The Hachette Book Group says Patterson has moved 1.14 million units of his books for devices like Kindle and the iPad.

I wonder how many other format books that Trilogy has sold? Those are some pretty powerful numbers from such a new and unestablished author. Of course part of the whole thing is the mystique of "this is it" No more books in the series unless they go with a ghost writer.

The Larsson Trilogy vs James Patterson sales numbers are interesting considering the Millenium Trilogy is usually priced around $5.90 (at least at Amazon) and Patterson books are usually priced $12.99 to $14.99

Unless of course his other half really does have most of another book on his old laptop as she claims (and the legal wrangles over his estate are resolved to her satisfaction).

I don't think Amazon's PR department cares about ePub sales. Just a guess.

is it me or has anyone else noticed that Amazon's PR is in overdrive to keep their name in the news and to keep chest pounding how great they are?

Being in the marketing business, it is a tactic used when competition has heated up.

As a Swede I take a perverse pride in the news that Stieg was the first author to sell more than 1,000,000 Kindle books. Here in Sweden there is some controversy as too how much he wrote himself and how much his SO wrote. His reputation was as a researcher, not a wordsmith. I obviously read them in their original Swedish, and must say I am somewhat surprised of this international appeal as some of the issues referred to are domestic Swedish political problems, something that doesn't get many inches in foreign press.

This is significant because the books are relatively new--Patterson's been accruing ebook sales in many formats on many books over many years. I've heard the announced Kindle numbers are just over 800,000. For Larsson to come in and do it with three books in a handful of years is a sign of the revolution.

By this time next year, I predict we will have a single book surpassing the million-Kindle mark. Possibly The Passage?

The first book was really just another murder/investigative story, the second two books (which I supect were written as one and split into two because of the length) deal with the internal/secret workings of a foreign government and so provide a novel reading experience. The FBI for example features in so much fiction that it is a little overdone.

I've no idea which ebook will be the first million selling Kindle Edition. Unless J K Rowling decides to issue HP in ebook format....

Amazon gets criticized for NOT releasing sales figures ... it gets criticized FOR releasing sales figures ... it gets criticized for exclusive deals ... it gets criticized for trying to dominate by executing a cross-platform strategy ....

There is no hype around Amazon's accomplishment: selling 1 million Kindle ebooks of a single author. Last week they noted 860,000 copies of James Patterson books had been sold as Kindle ebooks, about 75% of all Patterson ebooks sold to date, according to the ABA. At the time, Amazon also noted four other authors had sold more than 500,000 Kindle ebooks each.

What's really fascinating is the dead silence from every other vendor. Has Kobo, for example, sold a million ebooks across its entire selection yet? Where do Barnes & Noble or Sony Reader store stand? I'm not suggesting they need to report these figures -- it's their right to remain silent about competitive info.

However, the conclusion becomes inevitable, doesn't it?, that Amazon is doing very well in the ebook space, thank you very much. This is not a bad prelude to the news in the coming days of the next iteration of the Kindle 2 format which will lead into xmas sales 2010.

I think it is wonderful that e books are being sold in such numbers. Not too fussed as to who is doing the selling at this point.

That's actually one of the reasons I enjoyed them so much. There is a lot of interesting tidbits about Sweden in them that I found fascinating. It's also interesting to compare the author's perspective of the political intrigue in Sweden with that of my own perspective of the US.

That, and I liked the character of Lisbeth a lot.

Salander is a truly modern woman.
Noomi Rapace played her in the movies, and that seems to have launched an international career for her.
