OpenOffice Is Too Demanding

This would be a terrific idea if it was possible.

I have not tried installing Oo 3 because the suite exceeds the capabilities of the SmartQ 7.

The Q7 has just 128 MB RAM and Version 3 of Open Office needs 256 MB.

See http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/s...s_reqs_30.html.

Rats! So unless somebody finds away of doubling the RAM or somebody brings out a slimmed down version of OO for MID type devices thats a definite NO

The amount of RAM is also limited by the BIOS so it's not just a matter of adding RAM. The BIOS would likely need reprogramming. I've run into this on systems like the Fujitsu B2630, which has 256MB of RAM that can be swapped out for 512MB but the BIOS won't recognize the new configuration.

Also, OpenOffice 3 needs a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels according to the requirements page above. The Q7 has a max resolution of 800 x 480.

I assume you know that a spreadsheet (Gnumeric) and a word processor (AbiWord) already run on the Q7.

Were you looking for additional software such as a presentation program like Impress?

I'm sure with all the folks who use the Q7 there are many who could make suggestions to help you find software to do whatever job you need done.

I wouldn't say it is a definite NO, you can do it but the experience would be very poor. You can get around the memory limitation using swap, and at some point in the future compcache (once its bugs are worked out). But that still leaves you with screen resolution and performance issues that would make it almost unusable.

I know there is work to improve OO memory use, performance and interface but I can't see it ever being well suited to a device like the Q7. There are several other lighter office programs that will give a much better experience. As cetica96 Abiword and gnumeric are both good alternatives.

For presentation software you can browse through
http://www.linuxlinks.com/Software/Office/Presentation/

Imposter might be the ticket (I haven't used it and I am unsure if it is available for the Q7 yet) if you just want to view presentations.

Thanks for the information (Celtica96 & jrj). AbiWord & Gnumeric would probably do I fine job it`s just that I use OO on both my Windows desktops and plan to use it on a Linux desktop I am setting up (to learn Linux) so would have liked to stayed with it across all my devices.
