App is short for application.
Windows has millions of them. In this Case, the Kindle for Win8 app is built on the "Modern windows" API instead of the older desktop APIs of Kindle for PC. It'll be interesting to see what Alf's friends make of it. |

This is a great reason why I buy my ebooks from Amazon and not Apple, even though I read on my iPad and iPhone. Even though I like the iBooks app better than the Kindle app. If DRM is going to lack me in, I'd at least prefer to be with Amazon who does a terrific job of putting it's app everywhere.

Heck if I know!
I don't have Windows 8 (and have no intention of getting it anytime soon), but I would be interested to know how the Kindle for Windows 8 app and Kindle for PC software differ as far as features/function. Does the Windows 8 Kindle app have the same features as Kindle for Android app, which I do use on my tablets? |

Whether it turns out to be a superset of Android features or merely equivalent remains to be seen. Reviewers will tell us soon enough. Just as they'll tell us how it differs from K4PC. Which still runs on Win8 x86. |

Ho-ho!
Amazon has pulled off an interesting coup: Several (most?) Windows systems (tablets, laptops, and desktops) will come with Kindle for Win8 pre-installed: http://www.zdnet.com/amazon-kindle-a...es-7000006433/ Quote:
So much for Microsoft putting Nook on Win8 systems. |

The OEMs have a lot of say about what ships atop their hardware. In fact a lot of the "bloat", "crapware", and instability that many ascribe to Windows has nothing to do with MS. In fact, Amazon trumping Nook that way is not unprecedented. Quite a few MS competitors over the years have gotten their products preinstalled on Windows PCs beside or instead of Microsoft's product. Suites like WordPerfectOffice and Lotus SmartSuite come to mind. |

2. The courts have made it clear that only Apple can lock competitors off their platform. |
