Hello from Southern Calif

Hi - I expect to purchase an e-reader in the next couple of weeks. Am attempting to evaluate the Sony Touch and comparable Kindle (if there is such a device). I've spent about 15 minutes on the MobileRead site, but don't really know where to start. Would like to educate myself on how the Sony Touch and Kindle distinguish themselves, where to go to check prices on, for example, newly released novels, and why and how I need to be familiar with the various file types. Thanks in advance. Lee

Welcome, Lee. Good advice from Cassidy.

The prices on newly-released novels are pretty much the same for both devices (usually $9.99 for best-sellers). Sony is moving to the epub file type this month (which everyone uses but Amazon) and Kindles have their own format. You might want to check out B&N's Nook as well.

Welcome to MobileRead, Lee,.

The Kindle does not have a touch screen.

Here is a link from our Wiki detailing the differences between all readers.

Welcome to MR, Irh

You can check for information in our Wiki also. This page compares e-book reader devices that use epaper.

I just purchased a black Sony Reader Touch Edition. Am re-reading Tom Sawyer with a book on Karl Marx to follow. Thanks again all of you for the assistance.
