Banks might well be witty and heartbreaking to the end, like his books (though I've only read Crow Road and The Wasp Factory):
"Will you do me the honour of becoming my widow?" May that serve him, and help to make his remaining time with Adele more pleasant and meaningful. If you listen as you read, you can hear Banks' speaking voice in his style. It hurts even to imagine sitting with him and hearing his voice -- how funny and haunting he might prove despite the trials ahead. At least he knows he's left an indelible mark. May The Quarry "hit the shelves" as soon as possible. |

I have a strong memory of a very enjoyable train journey from the NW of England up to Glasgow in the company of Iain Banks and Bob Shaw, when they were both guests of honour at a Glasgow Eastercon. Iain and Bob between them demolished an entire 1l bottle of whisky on that 3h journey . Alas Bob has been dead for many years, and now it looks as though Iain too won't be with us much longer. A genuinely nice man - this is really terrible news.

Terrible news for Science-Fiction. There are some other SF authors I like to read, but no one in his calibre. Possibly the greatest Sci-fi author ever, hands-down. Really rotten luck. This news has really affected me. Safe journey, Iain.

What a shame. He didn't quite make it for the release of his new book as he was hoping.

Not a surprise, obviously, but very sad news nonetheless.
