When it is switched off the screen is a very dark blue. When it is on the screen is not harsh at all but very soothing. I think this device was made for people who dislike LCD. I'll also say that as a reader and with its phenomenal screen, this $250 device outshines (pun intended) the iPad. As I suspected I found the fonts are much cleaner and easier to read than on the iPad. I went into the store wanting to dislike the Nook Color because I wanted to wait and see what RIMM's more advanced Playbook could do. But after a few minutes with it I was nearly sold and put my name on a list for the store stock arriving in about a week. ColdSun, I look forward to your review of the NC. |

In my defense, your threads were not an objection to the original post, but to the way we were all looking forward to the nook color. Don't you think perhaps your criticism was a bit harsh and maybe inflammatory? I am not a fanboy for any company. I recognize the strengths and weaknesses in all devices. I don't think that the nook color is going to be perfect. In fact, there are some things that I learned from the reviews that disappoint me (ex: no pinch zoom for the web browser). However, I know what I am getting into and did consider the competition. In fact, in my original post here I was pondering buying the Archos 101. In the end, the screen quality, size/weight, and form factor seemed to be closer to what I have been looking for. So, I took a chance on the pre-order. I'm not sure why that is such a big deal. |

I think you will find a world of difference in that device against the Nook Color. The screen being the biggest factor, both in resolution and type (capacitive). That isn't to say the cheaper device isn't useful, it could serve as an LCD reader quite well, but think of it more like comparing a no-name brand MP3 player to an iPod. That is the quality difference we are talking here. If you are truly looking for a multi-function device, and not a dedicated LCD reader, then that device might even be better for you. On the other hand, if you want the best possible LCD screen for reading, I would say the Nook Color.
Seriously though, that device at KMart being $139 is not worth the price when you can get a much better device for just a little bit more. This one here is what I'm talking about. If anything comes close to being a competitor for the Nook Color in price and quality it is the Archos 70. The NC has a better screen resolution for $50 more. Coincidentally, Archos will begin to sell the 70 in the US on November 19th. They know who their competitor is. I have been down the road of cheap tablets, many times, and I think I'll stay off it now that brand name companies are starting to enter the fray. Just wait. They will have to lower prices on some of these more expensive ones soon. Check out this one at Best Buy. Keep an eye on that one, it WILL go down, and soon. I've held it and it is very nice (but I am far more excited about what is inside the NC). Last edited by ColdSun; 11-16-2010 at 10:47 PM. |

Ok, truce. Thread war over
B&N did state that the 2.2 update would be coming next year. After my experience with other tablets like the Pandigital Novel, I'm pretty confident that it will be rooted soon and custom firmware will be available. That's what I'm waiting for. In the meantime, I'm not getting rid of my classic nook or my Asus T91mt tablet. |

I think the Archos 70 or 101 are the best alternatives at $270 and $300. |

My bn (Winston salem,nc) had one in stock due to a presale customer getting one elsewhere! Posting from it now. Can't speak highly enough of the screen, and while the book interfaceis mildly choppy, the device itself (browser etc) is snappy!
Web browsing in landscape is a dream... so comfy in he hands. Now... where's the Root??? |

I wish I had the money for one of these right now. I really don't like how little the ipad does for $500-$800 (no HDMI, no SD slot, no USB, Apple's walled garden).
The Nook Color seemed like a great product right away. They did it right. Nice resolution IPS screen with capacitive touch (most important!), lots of RAM and a very decent processor. I'm an e-ink guy for reading. But this looks like a great tablet. |

Picked up my Nook Color yesterday at the local BN. It is my first eReader, because I was waiting for backlighting, since I read in bed in the dark. I'm loving it, and the browser, while not quite as fast as my laptop, is still adequate, and is an acceptable tradeoff for me because it is much more portable than a laptop. And I can't stick a laptop in my purse. I am now hoping that developers hop on board and create apps that I would like. For example, I would like a Netflix app. I've accessed Facebook on it, and while it works fairly well, I think it would work smoother with a dedicated app. I would also like to see an email client. But the bottom line for me is that it more than meets my requirements for a backlit reader. It is intuitive, fast, was easy to setup, feels good in the hands, and buying a book is so easy. I have bought Kindle books for my iPhone before, and I was concerned that the Nook process would not be as easy and fast as Amazon's process, but those concerns were not valid at all. Bottom line is -- so far, so good! I selfishly hope it is successful, but I also feel that competition is healthy, and for many people like me, the Nook fits a niche that fits somewhere between a Kindle and an iPad. I had thought at one time that I wanted an iPad, but now that I have a Nook reader along with an iPhone and laptop, I'm good! It isn't for everybody, for example the devoted e-ink readers, but it is exactly what I had been waiting for.
