Hardy's penultimate novel, first published in 1891.
Description from Amazon: When Tess Durbeyfield is driven by family poverty to claim kinship with the wealthy D'Urbervilles and seek a portion of their family fortune, meeting her 'cousin' Alec proves to be her downfall. A very different man, Angel Clare, seems to offer her love and salvation, but Tess must choose whether to reveal her past or remain silent in the hope of a peaceful future. With its sensitive depiction of the wronged Tess and powerful criticism of social convention, Tess of the D'Urbervilles is one of the most moving and poetic of Hardy's novels. With 24 illustrations by various artists from the original magazine serialisation. Enjoy! ![]() Hardy uses the landscape very imaginatively; especially the climactic scene at Stonehenge. (Incidentally, the Polanski film version is awful. One of the few films I've walked out of in the cinema ![]() If anyone thinks the book is going to be as dire that heap of celluloid rubbish, please think again and give it a go - you're in for a treat. ![]() Last edited by Sparrow; 08-27-2008 at 03:35 PM. |

The specific reason I did it is that the BBC are about to start showing a version of it. "Costume Drama" is something which they generally do VERY well indeed.
