Before SFWA there was PITFCS--

In 1959 the late Ted Cogswell started a "fanzine for pros" with the mock-pompous title Publications of the Institute of Twenty-First Century Studies, soon to be known as PITFCS. Its circulation was limited to science fiction writers and editors, and its contents were mostly their letters discussing their own and each other's work. PITFCS quickly became the place where s-f professionals talked to each other about the problems of the field, both literary and economic.

The discussions were frank, discerning, insightful, humorous, occasionally a little insulting, and even a bit bawdy. PITFCS was where the pros could let their hair down. It lasted only a few years--Cogswell had to give it up in order to write his doctoral dissertation. Then the Science Fiction Writers of America was organized, and SFWA's publications began filling the niche that PITFCS had occupied. PITFCS was short-lived, but has been remembered with joy all these years, and Advent is proud to reprint it now.

Here are letters and essays from such science fiction notables as Brian Aldiss, Poul Anderson, Isaac Asimov, James Blish, Algis Budrys, John W. Campbell, Arthur C. Clarke, Avram Davidson, Gordon Dickson, Harlan Ellison, Harry Harrison, Damon Knight, Fritz Leiber, Frederik Pohl, Eric Frank Russell, Kurt Vonnegut, and Don Wollheim.

(How is the acronym PITFCS pronounced? Don't ask. But if you insist, Tony Boucher tells you in a limerick.)

This volume reprints PITFCS from first issue to last, and adds an index which is perhaps more comprehensive than it needs to be. However, we have omitted most of the typos for which Ted Cogswell was famous. (His motto was "PITFCS are never proofread.")

Amazing and astounding to note, this is not a period piece with only historical interest. Most of the problems discussed in PITFCS are still living issues today. It seems the tensions between writers, editors, and publishers don't change.

The issues of PITFCS form a huge book of some 350,000 words (8 1/2 x 11 inch pages of small type in double column), for the delectation of the general science fiction readership.

This collection of previously unpublished stories, from the mid-eighties through the nineties and including recent work, presents examples of the thousand-plus stories written during that time. Since Bruce had a job (working as a therapist on an in-patient psychiatric unit which he found fascinating), he was energized after working to write whatever he felt like writing, sometimes for five to six hours straight while not having to worry about paying the electric bill. The result was work that was both similar to Kafka and Bradbury with many a blending of both, leading to a hybrid form akin to a blending of magic realism and science fiction. Here the reader will find stories ranging from the surreal horror of "Borealis," to the humor of "Oops" and the magic realism/science fiction of "In Trainment." But in the end, Bruce hopes his work pays sufficient honor and homage to the strange dark inventiveness of Kafka and to the lyrical genius of Bradbury, who, in the end, gave permission to own one's powers of perception and imagination.

This book is NOT science fiction. The disclaimer is necessary because the late Edward Elmer "Doc" Smith made his literary name in writing science fiction. He was one of the earliest writers of interstellar and intergalactic adventure stories, fondly referred to as "space opera." His Skylark novels began to appear in the science fiction magazines in 1928, followed by his epic Lensman series starting in 1937. Doc's literary estate has now released to Advent the four stories which make up this book; they have never before been published. So far as we know, these are Doc's only stories that are not science fiction or fantasy. Advent usually publishes only non-fiction related to science fiction, such as criticism or bibliography; we are bringing out this book primarily because of its associational interest to Doc Smith's many fans.

The title novel, Have Trenchcoat--Will Travel, is a contemporary "private eye" thriller. Doc called it a "whodunit," but it is really more of a "howdunit." Ace private investigator Matyas "Ty" Nagy knows practically from the start who the villain is; the problem is to figure out just what he did and track him down. Vanessa Vukovich--a beautiful tigress of a woman--hires Ty to find her fugitive husband. She discovers in Ty a tiger to match her own spirit. They quickly fall in love, making it all the more urgent to locate Alex Vukovich so she can divorce him. It soon transpires that Vanessa may already be a widow--but it may be impossible to prove it.

The three shorter stories are "Motorsickle Cop," an adventure story of the Newvadia highway patrol, reflecting Doc's life-long interest in biking; "Nester of the Caramints," a Western set near the end of the frontier days; and "Full-Time Nurse," a light romance which may have been inspired by Doc's own experience with heart-lung surgery.
