Free (DRM-free) Double Star by Robert A. Heinlein [Award-Win Vintage Science Fiction]
Double Star by the late Robert A. Heinlen ISFDB, Wikipedia, SFE, a recipient of multiple awards and honours, including being named the SFWA's first ever Grand Master, is his vintage classic science fiction novel, this one apparently a standalone dealing with interplanetary politics, starring an unemployed actor hired to play a role with unexpectedly high stakes, with the fate of Mars potentially hanging in the balance, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Phoenix Pick Press.
This is one of their two featured Free Book of the Month selections for December (the other is a repeat of Mike Resnick & Lezli Robyn's collection Soulmates, with a new tie-in offer) and was originally published in 1956 by Doubleday, winning that year's Hugo Award for Best Novel . Currently free through the month of December directly @ the publisher's dedicated promo page (DRM-free ePub & Mobi bundle available worldwide; follow the instructions on the webpage to reset the price in the cart to $0.00) There are two Heinlein-related tie-in offers this month, for two more of his vintage classic novels, offered separately for $2.99 each, which is a nice touch, since like me, you might have already picked one or the other up from previous tie-in bundle offers. Anyway, they're for his juveniles, Podkayne of Mars from 1963 and Time for the Stars from 1956, and if you don't already have either, there's a bundle discount to grab them both for just $5.50. Description Many of Heinlein’s fans consider the novels he wrote in the fifties amongst the author’s strongest work; when he was at the peak of his talents. Double Star is considered by many to be the finest of his titles. Brian Aldiss called it his “most enjoyable novel.” Whether it is the simplicity of a lively tale, the complexity of the situation, or the depth of characterization, the book has developed a loyal following. It also won Heinlein his first Hugo. The story revolves around Lawrence Smith—also known as “Lorenzo the Great”—a down-and-out actor wasting the remainder of his life in bars. When he encounters a space-pilot who offers him a drink, before he knows what is going on, he is on Mars involved in a deep conspiracy with global consequences. He is given a mission where failure would not only mean his own death, it would almost certainly mean an all-out planetary war. |

Just a reminder that this might be the last day (maybe an extra day for the New Year's holiday) to pick up the freebie and/or purchase the tie-in deal, if you're interested.

For some reason, I didn't have this although I read it some some 40 years ago.
