Just wanted to mention that Jim Butcher's Furies of Calderon is also on for $0.99 at Amazon.ca and Kobo Canada. I really liked the Codex Alera; having at least the first book in ebook form is a no-brainer for me.

Thanks for that! It's still on sale, so I picked it up.

I've heard of N.K. Jemisin, but have never read any of her work. Her list of award nominations is impressive. I wonder if it has to do with her background in psychology?

The Devourers by Indra Das is $1.99 on Amazon.com's daily deal.

Quote:
On a cool evening in Kolkata, India, beneath a full moon, as the whirling rhythms of traveling musicians fill the night, college professor Alok encounters a mysterious stranger with a bizarre confession and an extraordinary story. Tantalized by the man’s unfinished tale, Alok will do anything to hear its completion. So Alok agrees, at the stranger’s behest, to transcribe a collection of battered notebooks, weathered parchments, and once-living skins.

From these documents spills the chronicle of a race of people at once more than human yet kin to beasts, ruled by instincts and desires blood-deep and ages-old. The tale features a rough wanderer in seventeenth-century Mughal India who finds himself irrevocably drawn to a defiant woman—and destined to be torn asunder by two clashing worlds. With every passing chapter of beauty and brutality, Alok’s interest in the stranger grows and evolves into something darker and more urgent.
This is a gory book that's partly horror. Consider reading these reviews before deciding if it's for you:

Thanks for that. Dark fantasy (which is what the book sounds like to me) isn't usually my bag. The Jemisin review and the fact that the book sounds more literary than most of that stuff convinced me to try it.

Incidentally, the book sounds like something Clive Barker would have written. Other reviewers say Neil Gaiman. Makes me wonder why Barker doesn't get name-dropped more.

The Quantum Magician by Derek Künsten is £0.99 at Amazon UK today.

It's a novel that was serialised in Analog SFF (I think it was Analog). A con job with a background of a fractured humanity, and some nods to Quantum Theory (although the use they make of entangled particles isn't possible, as far as we know.)

I'm reading it at the moment, having bought it last month for £1.99!

Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey is $1.99 at Amazon US.

From Publishers Weekly
Quote:
This brilliant and daring debut, set in a skewed Renaissance world (people worship Jesus-like "Blessed Elua" but also demigods), catapults Carey immediately into the top rank of fantasy novelists. In the character of Phédre nó Delaunay, "a whore's unwanted get" sold into indentured servitude in opulent Night Court, the author has created a particularly strong and memorable female lead, and has surrounded her with a large and varied cast, from nobles and priests to soldiers and peasants. An engrossing plot focuses first on court intrigue and treachery, then, in a surprising shift, on high adventure, travel in barbarian lands including Alba (England) and war. Two demigods rule Phédre: Naamah, for sensual love; and Kushiel, for sado-masochistic pain, his "dart" being a blood spot in Phédre's eye. Not everyone will go for Phédre's graphic if elegantly described sexual encounters, which usually involve the infliction of pain, whether from lashing, branding or even cutting. Phédre, however, is no clichéd sexpot but a complex character motivated by religious zeal. In one amusing scene, a group of sailors on the march chants: "Whip us till we're on the floor, we'll turn around and ask for more, we're Phédre's Boys!" At the end, the heroine reminds one of an equally strong-minded sister whose home was Tara. No mere feminist novel, this is an assured and magnificent book that will appeal to both male and female readers.

I did too a few years ago though I thought Spin was the best of the bunch.
