Some free inspirational romances:

Touching the Clouds by Bonnie Leon Christianbooks / Kobo / Amazon / Kobo

Quote:
Kate Evans is an adventurous and independent young woman with a pioneering spirit. She pilots a mail-delivery plane in the forbidding Alaskan wilderness, the lone woman in a male profession. But even that seems easy compared to finding true love. She likes a fellow pilot and would even consider marrying him--if it weren't for Paul, a mysterious man on her mail route with a gentle spirit and a past to hide. Can Kate break through the walls Paul has put up around his heart? And will her quest for adventure be her demise?
From a Distance by Tamera Alexander Christianbooks / Kobo / Amazon / Nook

Quote:
What happens when the realization of a dream isn't what you imagined... and the secret you've spent a lifetime guarding is finally laid bare?

Determined to become one of the country's premier newspaper photographers, Elizabeth Westbrook travels to the Colorado Territory to capture the grandeur of the mountains surrounding the remote town of Timber Ridge. She hopes, too, that the cool, dry air of Colorado, and its renowned hot springs, will cure the mysterious illness that threatens her career, and her life.

Daniel Ranslett, a former Confederate sharpshooter, is a man shackled by his past, and he'll do anything to protect his land, and his solitude. When an outspoken Yankee photographer captures an image that appears key to solving a murder, putting herself in danger, Daniel is called upon to repay a debt. He's a man of his word, but repaying that debt could bring secrets from his past to light.

Forced on a perilous journey together, Daniel and Elizabeth's lives intertwine in ways neither could have imagined when first they met...from a distance.
Livvie's Song by Sharlene MacLaren Christianbooks / Kobo / Amazon / Nook

Quote:
A young widow opens her own diner, determined to pull through on her own. A Christian ex-convict is ready for a fresh start, and a job as cook. A recipe for romance develops.

The Danbury Scandals US DE by Mary Nichols (Mills & Boon 1992).

Quote:
When Maryanne Paynter is ten, her beloved mother dies and she is taken by her great uncle to live with the Reverend Mr Cudlipp at Beckford. Her life is unexceptional until, a little before her twenty-first birthday, Viscount Danbury takes her to Castle Cedars, the country estate of the Duke of Wiltshire where she is taken to see the Dowager Duchess, a frail, bedridden old lady who is apparently anxious to make her acquaintance. Furious with the way she is treated Maryanne runs from the house, only to fall into the arms of a mysterious man walking through the woods who seems unusually interested in the occupants of Castle Cedars. She is unsure whether he is a gypsy, a poacher or an escaped prisoner of war, for the war with Napoleon has just ended with the dictator’s defeat and imprisonment of the island of Elba.
Later, she learns that her mother was the daughter of the fifth Duke of Wiltshire, who disowned her when she married a man of whom they disapproved. But now the old man is dead and the dowager is anxious to bring Maryanne back into the family. Instead of returning to the rectory, she is to live with Viscount Danbury and his son, Mark, and spoiled daughter, Caroline.
It is the beginning of a new and bewildering life, not made easier by old scandals and the occasional reappearance of the intriguing man she met in the wood, who seems to have a string of pseudonyms and disguises. There is mystery and danger, a proposal and more scandal and Maryanne, in the thick of it, does not know whom to trust. Mark or the man who calls himself variously le Choucas, Jack Daw or Adam St Pierre?
Summer's Storm US DE by Denise Domning (Topaz 1994).

Quote:
Philippa of Lindhurst has lived twelve terrible years at the hands of an abusive husband. Now, with no hope of rescue in sight, Philippa meets her half-sister's brother by marriage, Temric FitzHenry. Temric, a bastard son of Lord Graiston has come to bring Philippa to an audience with the bishop. But when Temric realizes it is Philippa who has haunted his dreams, and sees the way she is mistreated by her cruel husband, he devises a plan to make Philippa his. It is a risky and elaborate plan, but when Temric learns that Philippa returns his love he is determined to make her disappear. It is a time of strict morals, however, and both Temric and Pippa know they have sinned and must somehow deal with both their fears of damnation and the fear of Philippa's existence being revealed, thus resulting in her death by her husband hand. The couple's problems mount until they must inevitably result in a battle to the death between Temric and Lord Lindhurst. But before the couple can live in peace, they must still find a way to keep Philippa's existence a secret while still being able to marry with permission from the church!
The Starry Child US DE by Lynn Hanna (Onyx 1998). - repeat freebie

Quote:
If you enjoy the extraordinary stories of Diana Gabaldon, Karen Marie Moning, and the paranormal works of Nora Roberts...

THE STARRY CHILD is a spell-binding, unforgettable story of a star-crossed love that survives through the ages, a tale as timeless as the mystic Scottish legends and forbidden lovers among the heather of long ago. Yet it is as vibrant and alive in the present day as those whose fates now hang in the balance. It's the story of a young mother who learns that her own destiny is forever tied to a man she hardly knows, a man of the Highlands. Yet in her heart, she realizes that he's someone she has always known. And at the center of it all lies an undying love held in secret by a little girl.

Since the tragic death of her father, eight-year-old Sasha Nielson has not spoken a word. Her mother, Rainey, has taken her to doctors and therapists, but medical science has not found the cause or the cure for Sasha’s silence. There are days when her behavior is baffling, even potentially dangerous, particularly during lightning storms. The authorities threaten to take Sasha away and time is running out.

One man sees beyond Sasha’s mysteries. Matt Macinnes is a gifted professor of ancient languages, a man who senses that there is a key to Sasha’s silence, that she may in fact be guarding a secret of such profound and terrifying dimensions that it staggers the imagination. Only Matt can get Sasha to whisper her secrets, secrets she reveals to him in Old Gaelic, a language she has never had access to. Could this All-American little girl truly be carrying around the restless soul of an exiled Celtic queen of old?

More than that, Matt finds himself drawn to Rainey's amazing strength and beauty. He feels ties to her that he can't explain. But her protective instincts toward little Sasha have built a fortress around her heart, a barrier that only hard-won trust and absolute proof of his worthiness can tear down. He is devoted to both mother and daughter, but the mystery of Sasha's secret destiny must be solved before he can reveal the passionate truth that burns within him.

Rainey has fought to keep Sasha safe from the cruelty and ignorance of the world. She has tried everything to help Sasha overcome her silence, but in the end, Sasha's wordlessness has prevailed and stress and exhaustion are Rainey's constant companions. She can't fix things by herself, but she doesn't dare trust anyone else for fear others have a dark agenda that could lead to the loss of Sasha. Matt is very tempting. Aside from the fact that he has an almost mystical kind of attraction about him, it would be very easy to simply hand him her heart and her impossible responsibilities and let him take over for a while. Added to that, Sasha adores him at first sight. But is Matt only helping them in order to earn himself professional recognition and a hefty university grant? How can she deny being drawn to him with every breath she takes as if she has known and loved him for a thousand years? How can she dare to trust him when not only her heart is at stake, but Sasha's heart is in the balance as well?

At thirty-two Dev is "mostly retired" from Raines Investigations, content to run operations from his sprawling Arizona home. But Dev has never been able to say no to a beautiful woman, so when Lark Delaney comes to him for help, the former U.S. Army Ranger from Wind Canyon gets back in the game.
Lark is sexy, successful and dedicated to tracking down the baby girl her sister gave up for adoption. It should be a straightforward case, but it's not long before Dev uncovers a shady adoption ring and worse—the child's parents have been murdered and the little girl has been taken.

As the case grows dangerous and Lark needs him more than ever, Dev can't ignore his growing attraction for her. He also can't trust his judgment with women or the emotions he's long-since buried. But there's a chance, if he gets this right and saves Lark's niece, that he'll end up saving himself, too.

Dance with a Gunfighter US DE by Joanne Pence (writer of Angie Amalfi mysteries, published by Avon). This one was published earlier under the pseudonym JoMarie Lodge, so the author claims, but I can't find it anywhere online. Should she be lying to gather more interest in her work? Inside the book, there's mention of a 2011 copyright, but not of a publisher or a different title. Hmm.

Quote:
The Price of Vengeance

Gabriella Devere wants vengeance. She grows up quickly when she witnesses the murder of her family by a gang of outlaws, and vows to make them pay for their crime. When the law won't help her, she takes matters into her own hands. Jess McLowry left his war-torn Southern home to head West, where he hired out his gun. When he learns what happened to Gabriella's family, and what she plans, he knows a young woman like her will have no chance against the outlaws, and vows to save her the way he couldn't save his own family. But the price of vengeance is high and Gabriella's willingness to sacrifice everything ultimately leads to the book's deadly and startling conclusion.

This is a harsh and gritty tale of the old West, somewhat reminiscent of Charles Portis' True Grit or Nancy Turner's These is My Words.
Wise Follies US DE by Grace Wynne-Jones (Simon & Schuster, 1997 & Accent Press, 2007).

Quote:
Why waving goodbye to Mr Wonderful may be the wisest folly of all...

Alice Evans has got a GSOH, GFCH (gas-fired central heating), a cat and a Mitsubishi colour portable. People have told her she can look pretty if she tries. She's thirty-eight and single, so will someone please pass the message on?

What Alice thinks she needs is Mr Wonderful. A man like her pottery teacher, James Mitchel, who's warm and wise and gorgeous. But as one long, hot summer disappears with no sign of her snaring the man of her dreams, Alice is forced to consider the alternatives.

Should she settle for Mr Mediocre, her dull but dependable ex boyfriend Eamon, and spend the rest of her days trying to like golf?

Or could there be another way for a woman to ditch all the longing - and really start living her life?
Bundle of Joy US DE by Barbara Bretton (Harlequin 1991).

Quote:
One man
One woman
One night
One big surprise

Everyone in town knew Caroline and Charlie just weren't meant for each other. Like oil and water or chalk and cheese, the ex-Navy cook and the beautiful shop owner were a bad match, and although the small New Jersey town was filled with inveterate matchmakers, even the most determined of the lot had to admit this was one match that would never happen.

But nobody had figured on Caroline and Charlie getting locked in a storage vault with an automatic timer set for the next morning . . .

And Caroline and Charlie definitely hadn't figured on the little surprise they got a few months later when they discovered there was a baby on the way!

Caroline is sure she can handle everything alone but Charlie has other ideas: a modern marriage of convenience!

At first there isn't anything convenient about living with the all-male Charlie Donohue but before long Caroline's defenses are down and her husband-in-name-only is sharing her bed.

Is there even the slightest chance this marriage of inconvenience could turn into the real thing?

Chasing Venus US DE by Diana Dempsey (Onyx author).

Quote:
Known for page-turning romantic novels that keep you reading late into the night, Diana Dempsey delivers a suspenseful tale about a man and a woman who must shed the past to embrace the future …

Annette Rowell’s latest novel is leapfrogging up the bestseller lists, and with every surge in sales she’s becoming more of a household name. The literary success she’s struggled so hard for would be a dream come true were it not for the killer preying on bestselling authors.

Reid Gardner hosts a syndicated crime show dedicated to capturing the most dangerous fugitives. The former LAPD cop knows only too well how violence can shatter lives. No victim arouses his ardor more than the pretty brunette author who’s become the target of a psychopath. Yet falling in love with her could cost him not only the reputation he’s spent years building, but the one killer who forever eludes him …
