Irving, Washington: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (illus-Rackham). v1. 30 May 2017

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow By Washington Irving (1783–1859)
Illustrated by Arthur Rackham (1867–1939)

This short story was first published in 1820. The special edition of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow illustrated by Arthur Rackham was first published in 1928.

The text is in the public domain worldwide because the creator died more than 100 years ago, and it was published before 1923. The illustrations are in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less.

***************
Washington Irving was an American short story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories “Rip Van Winkle” (1819) and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” (1820), both of which appear in his book The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. His historical works include biographies of George Washington, Oliver Goldsmith, and Muhammad; and several histories of 15th-century Spain.

Irving perfected the American short story, and was the first American writer to place his stories firmly in the United States, even as he poached from European folklore. He is also generally credited as one of the first to write in the vernacular, and to write stories simply to entertain rather than to enlighten.

-------------
The story: a superstitious schoolmaster, who is in love with a wealthy farmer’s daughter, has a terrifying encounter with a headless horseman.

Along with Irving’s companion piece “Rip Van Winkle”, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” is among the earliest examples of American fiction with enduring popularity – especially during Halloween, because of a ghostly character, believed to be a Hessian soldier who lost his head to a cannonball in battle. Indeed, the story is often referred to as “The Headless Horseman.” This tale has been adapted countless times for stage, film, and television; and has had discernable impact on American culture, even to the extent of naming towns and streets after places and characters of the story.

This book is illustrated with 8 full-page color images and a number of line drawings by the Grand Master of “The Golden Age of Illustration”, Arthur Rackham. (Many of the original line drawings were unavailable.)

***************
Text and images were obtained from archive.org and various online sources. OCR errors were corrected; punctuation formatted; images manually cleaned and enhanced. Embedded font for titling. The List of Illustrations provides links to images.

***************
Enjoy the story! And use all due caution when traveling through the woods on autumn nights.

Thank you. A beautiful looking book, as always. I wish I could study and learn from your Photoshop technique the same way I can study your epub coding!
