All have been 99p on Amazon.co.uk over the past few years. I haven't read them myself yet but I liked her Cobweb Bride series enough to take a punt on them.
I bounced off this one, due to the impression that any race that has ANY form of interstellar travel will by definition be able to move an asteroid or comet, or at least keep it from impacting a planet, if there is enough time to run a competition. did not finish.

And I liked much of her work from years ago, mostly shorter fiction.

Of Dragons, Feasts and Murders by Aliette de Bodard is $0.99 on Amazon.com
This is a novella set in the Dominion of the Fallen world, but is standalone.
Quote:
A tale of dragons, and Fallen angels—and also kissing, sarcasm and stabbing.

Lunar New Year should be a time for familial reunions, ancestor worship, and consumption of an unhealthy amount of candied fruit.

But when dragon prince Thuan brings home his brooding and ruthless husband Asmodeus for the New Year, they find not interminable family gatherings, but a corpse outside their quarters. Asmodeus is thrilled by the murder investigation; Thuan, who gets dragged into the political plotting he’d sworn off when he left, is less enthusiastic.

It’ll take all of Asmodeus’s skill with knives, and all of Thuan’s diplomacy, to navigate this one—as well as the troubled waters of their own relationship….

A sparkling standalone book set in a world of dark intrigue.

A Note on Chronology
Spinning off from the Dominion of the Fallen series, which features political intrigue in Gothic devastated Paris, this book stands alone, but chronologically follows The House of Sundering Flames. It’s High Gothic meets C-drama in a Vietnamese inspired world—perfect for fans of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's Heaven Official's Blessing, KJ Charles, and Roshani Chokshi’s The Gilded Wolves.

AI 2041: Ten Visions for Our Future by Kai-Fu Lee (Author), Chen Qiufan is $2.99 on Amazon.com

This is a mix of computer-science explainers by Kai-Fu Lee and stories involving those topics by Chen Qiufan.
Quote:
AI will be the defining development of the twenty-first century. Within two decades, aspects of daily human life will be unrecognizable. AI will generate unprecedented wealth, revolutionize medicine and education through human-machine symbiosis, and create brand-new forms of communication and entertainment. In liberating us from routine work, however, AI will also challenge the organizing principles of our economic and social order. Meanwhile, AI will bring new risks in the form of autonomous weapons and smart technology that inherits human bias. AI is at a tipping point, and people need to wake up—both to AI’s radiant pathways and its existential perils for life as we know it.

In this provocative, utterly original work, Kai-Fu Lee, the former president of Google China and bestselling author of AI Superpowers, teams up with celebrated novelist Chen Qiufan to imagine our world in 2041 and how it will be shaped by AI. In ten gripping short stories, they introduce readers to an array of eye-opening 2041 settings, such as:

• In San Francisco, the “job reallocation” industry emerges as deep learning AI causes widespread job displacement
• In Tokyo, a music fan is swept up in an immersive form of celebrity worship based on virtual reality and mixed reality
• In Mumbai, a teenage girl rebels when AI’s crunching of big data gets in the way of romance
• In Seoul, virtual companions with perfected natural language processing (NLP) skills offer orphaned twins new ways to connect
• In Munich, a rogue scientist draws on quantum computing, computer vision and other AI technologies in a revenge plot that imperils the world

By gazing toward a not-so-distant horizon, AI 2041 offers urgent insights into our collective future—while reminding readers that, ultimately, humankind remains the author of its destiny.

Saving Time by Jodi Taylor (book 3 of Time Police) is $.99 at Amazon and Kobo

I'm a big fan of Jodi Taylor. She puts a lot of humor into her work. This is book 3 of a spinoff series from The Chronicles of St Mary's. You'll get more enjoyment if you read the St Mary's books first, but it is more or less independent of it. Time travel and history.

Kobo: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/search?qu...or+saving+time
Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Saving-Time-P...s%2C936&sr=8-1

For those who wondered, my laptop is now repaired and the wireless mouse appears to be working consistently which means I can copy and paste links again. All 3 USB ports were replaced, so that's probably why it didn't work.

Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan is £0.99 on Amazon.co.uk
Quote:

A captivating debut fantasy inspired by the legend of the Chinese moon goddess.

A young woman’s quest to free her mother pits her against the most powerful immortal in the realm, setting her on a dangerous path where those she loves are not the only ones at risk…

Growing up on the moon, Xingyin is accustomed to solitude, unaware that she is being hidden from the powerful Celestial Emperor who exiled her mother for stealing his elixir of immortality. But when her magic flares and her existence is discovered, Xingyin is forced to flee her home, leaving her mother behind.

Alone, powerless, and afraid, she makes her way to the Celestial Kingdom, a land of wonder and secrets. Disguising her identity, she seizes an opportunity to train in the Crown Prince’s service, learning to master archery and magic, despite the passion which flames between her and the emperor’s son.

To save her mother, Xingyin embarks on a perilous quest, confronting legendary creatures and vicious enemies, across the earth and skies.

But when treachery looms and forbidden magic threatens the kingdom, she must challenge the ruthless Celestial Emperor for her dream —striking a dangerous bargain, where she is torn between losing all she loves or plunging the realm into chaos.

Daughter of the Moon Goddess begins an enchanting, romantic duology which weaves ancient Chinese mythology into a sweeping adventure of immortals and magic, of loss and sacrifice — where love vies with honour, dreams are fraught with betrayal, and hope emerges triumphant.

There's quite a lot of good stuff on Amazon UK today: Joe Abercrombie, William Gibson, Brandon Sanderson, Patrick Rothfuss, 2020's Hugo winner from Arkady Martine, Alastair Reynolds' new Revelation Space book, etc. I assume it's the new monthly deals - in which case it's quite a strong month, even though I already own most of them - but it might be a shorter sale.

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead is $2.99 on Amazon.com
Was on my wishlist. This is the first time it's been on sale since 2018.
Quote:
Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. An outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is on the cusp of womanhood—where greater pain awaits. And so when Caesar, a slave who has recently arrived from Virginia, urges her to join him on the Underground Railroad, she seizes the opportunity and escapes with him.

In Colson Whitehead's ingenious conception, the Underground Railroad is no mere metaphor: engineers and conductors operate a secret network of actual tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil. Cora embarks on a harrowing flight from one state to the next, encountering, like Gulliver, strange yet familiar iterations of her own world at each stop.

As Whitehead brilliantly re-creates the terrors of the antebellum era, he weaves in the saga of our nation, from the brutal abduction of Africans to the unfulfilled promises of the present day. The Underground Railroad is both the gripping tale of one woman's will to escape the horrors of bondage—and a powerful meditation on the history we all share.

This one popped up in my BookBub daily email, and looks interesting. I'm strongly considering buying it: The Best Thing You Can Steal by Simon R. Green.
