Oh Ok thanks for the info 😀👍
I‘ll try to find something that helps me in this forums!

Hey guys! I successfully managed to jailbreak my kindle

Here's how it worked:

1)At first I had to download the correct Firmware for my device (In my case it was "factory_KT3_5.8.0_initial.bin" )
2)Then I renamed it to update.bin (necessary in a later step) and put it to the root directory of my kindle
3) I connected the Serial-USB-Converter to my kindle
4) I startet the device and interrupted the booting sequence by pressing the "enter" button to get into uboot
5)Here I entered the command "run diags_boot" to get into diagnostics mode
6)After the diagnostics mode was fully loaded I pressed enter to get into kindle Login
7)I logged in with "root" and password "mario"
8)When I got logged in I entered "reboot"
9)Now in the boot sequence there was an entry to get into recovery mode. It was shown up just for about 1 second. When this entry was shown I had to press "enter" to get into this mode.
10) Now I got into recovery mode.
11) Here I had 10 seconds time to choose one of the operations.
12) I entered "u" for "Update using update*.bin file on FAT Partition"
13) When the update was finished I was on Firmware 5.8.0

So I just had to follow the Software jailbreak tutorial!

Here's the log from PuTTY:

Maybe this goes without saying, but I think the HOWTO would be improved if it specified soldering hair-thin wires onto the comm pads.

I used 22-ga solid, figuring I'd plug a standard female header cable on it, and just insulate and leave it in place when I buttoned back up. Go ahead and judge; the method's worked well for me in the past, albeit perhaps on beefier pads. In any case, this time I twitched, and tore off the entire tx pad.

I assume this is the end of the experiment for *this* particular PW3, unless someone can tell me another place to access that trace?

There are on the back too, just opposite of the pads you tore off. They are beefier there too.

But you cannot really leave those hooked up, so you will have to clean the sodler off before you re-assemble the kindle, but you can jailbreak with it semi disassembled.

Heres my pic of that.
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...2&postcount=40

You do have to have the screen connected for the kindle to poot, but you can use electracal tape and set everything back in place loosely, to do this part. but the solder is too thick to let you screw everything back together properly.

@dsjstc: Which is why in the various write-ups I have done here, I show in an early step an expample of using a drop of "5-Minute" epoxy on the leads as a strain relief. Before doing the lead alignment and the soldering.

Notice in this thread there are also links to ways to make the connections without using hot solder.

I am sure you are not the first one to be tripped up by over confidence.
That "na, I don't need to do that" feeling.

And yes, that serial pin out is for a "standard" three lead connector.
(Some of the early K4 devices actually shipped with the connector in-place.)
I have a thread/post with pictures on this forum somewhere about the connectors.

Just wanted to share a serial connector that worked for me on a Kindle Paperwhite 3. The connector is similar to what others have used and consists in two cheap modules bought on ebay:

- FT232RL-FTDI-USB-3-3V-5-5V-to-TTL-Serial-Adapter-Module-for-Arduino-Mini-Port

- 12V In 1.8V Out AMS1117 Step-Down DC Power Converter Module

In addition, the following is very handy:

- STOCK IN US 1pc 40P 20cm 2.54mm Female to Female Dupont Wire Color Jumper Cable

- 3 Needles (like the ones coming with new shirts)

To assemble, cut one of the female to female jumper cable in half and solder one of them to the 5V pinout of the FTDI and the other to the GND. Connect the two jumpers to the 5V input of the Step-Down module. Connect a Female to Female Jumper cable from the 1.8V output of the step-down module to the middle jumper of the FTDI. This provides the 1.8 Voltage to the FTDI, instead of the 3.3V or 5.5V that can be selected using the original jumper. The FTDI can then be connected to the serial pins of the Kindle. I elected not to solder the wires and used instead 3 needles that I cut and inserted into the jumper cable (fits perfectly). I used foam as described in another thread to hold the needle in place. See pictures for more help. The whole thing worked perfectly to rescue a bricked PW3 for less then $10.

I was just about to re-open the kindle and reconnect to the serial port, when I tried the G090G1 bin which is posted here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...3&postcount=64. Much to my surprise the "Update Your Kindle" option became available! I executed that routine, which updated then rebooted, and voila...KUAL booklet was finally installed! From thereon in it was smooth sailing. Before running "UYK", I saw that the G090G1 bin file had been renamed with a long string of hex (a key of some sort to get the kindle to accept the update?) before I ran the UYK. Interesting.
Hi,

I've just successfully jailbreaked (jailbroken?) a PW3 (G090 G105) running FW v5.9.6.1 using serial method. That was an adventure! Now I'm ready to install KUAL and other fun stuffs, but not sure what to do with the G090G1.bin file... Care to expand on your advice above? Or point me to more info somewhere?

Thanks!

@RedRooster: That was a WIP build, forget about it and go read KUAL's first post and the relevant FAQ entry.

alternative serial adapter

The recommended adapter on the original post has been unavailable for some time. I would like to stick to the instructions as has been repeatedly reinforced on this site, but I was wondering if I could use the new Micro1v8.

Thank you for the clear guide.

1.8v USB to TTL UART Converter

I ordered this from ebay yesterday. Listing # "142006114032" TXD 1.8v PL2303 USB to TTL UART Converter Serial Download Cable module. Its coming on a slow boat from you know where. It needs 5 volts for vcc. If I can't find 5v on the mother board, I can grab it from somewhere. Also, the same store lists quantity 5 for $10.48 USD, free shipping.

Hello! So I followed your guide with my Kindle Voyage, using the items you had outlined I was able to get root access, place the files and then run the jail break (i even got the jailbreak message on the screen)

But for the life of me i cannot get KUAL working. I am trying to ;log mrpi method and the screen simply flashes and nothing happens. I am on firmware 5.9.7 on the Kindle Voyage. I'm posting the putty code following my root below. I appreciate the help guys I've now attempted to re-jailbreak twice and the same thing keeps happening. I'm using all files from the "snapshot" thread. Thank you so much as I'm going a bit crazy here haha!
