Troubleshooting my new K3W

Just received my Kindle 3 Wireless last night but having quite a few issues with it. Firstly, I cannot seem to get it out of the "USB drive mode". Even after following it's instructions and ejecting from the PC (running Windows 7 home premium) it remains on the same screen and the Kindle cannot be accessed.

I can't seem to create any collections either, the feature is permanently greyed out and I can't seem to find a solution to this either in the manual or FAQs. I've updated my software to 3.1 (as of 5 minutes ago), should I be looking to update the firmware??

I'm also looking to find a better alternative to the native mp3 function (to something where you can at least choose the tracks being played). Is https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=119851 the answer?

Lastly, it seems the default software for viewing Chinese (particularly Traditional) is not functionally 100%. Quite a few characters in my ebooks fail to display (shows up as rectangles). Is there a solution to this?

Thanks in advance for any help and sorry for the barrage of queries. Just want to iron out the edges before fully indulging.

You need to register your kindle on your amazon account, namely let it make contact with the mothership via wifi. It will go from "My Kindle" to "Drexus's Kindle" on the top left corner of the screen when you press "menu"

Sorry, don't really have any reliable advice for the other issues. But fear not you will be helped by other users who have had the other issues you mention (or who simply know what to do )

To eject the kindle you have to eject it by going to My computer, right clicking on the kindle drive and click the Eject on that menu. Silly I know

If you aren't connected to your PC (with the USB cable) and your Kindle is still stuck on the USB screen and you can't access anything... hold the power switch over for about 30 seconds and then release it. That should restart the Kindle.

If you're still connected via the USB cable and it won't "eject" properly, then that's a different issue. I seem to remember there was a slightly different process involved on Windows 7 than there was with XP/Vista. Unfortunately, I can't help with Win 7. It's not really a super-duper big deal if you just unplug it.

I find that I very rarely need to be able to read or access my Kindle's menus while it's plugged into my PC anyway. I'm either reading, charging, or transferring and rarely do those intersect for me

This for reading the Kindle while plugged into your PC on Win7 (it's actually Start - Computer on Win7). Probably same for Vista as well.

That seemed to have done the trick thanks everyone


I'm struggling with DuoKan now... it keeps giving errors when installing.
Do I need to uninstall the jailbreak/screensaver hack etc... before attempting a DuoKan install?

edit: uninstalled all the stuff and duokan has installed without problems
