Significant Apps Missing from Amazon's Appstore

With the Kindle Tablet about to be released, I thought it would be helpful to make a list of significant apps missing from Amazon's Appstore. Potential buyers should be aware of this appstore's limitations, since the Kindle Tablet will probably be locked into Amazon's ecosystem. I'll update this list as other apps are brought to my attention.

Missing from Appstore for Android
  • Blockbuster
  • Dropbox
  • Google - their entire app suite
  • Hulu Plus -- now available
  • Netflix -- now available
  • Nook
  • OverDrive Media Console
  • Pandora -- now available
  • Sony Reader
  • Zinio -- now available

Edited to reflect additions to the Appstore

Well, if the rumor is true that Amazon may bundle Amazon Prime Membership for free streaming video with their tablet, there's no way they'd allow Netflix or Hulu onto their tablet. Or any of the Google App store. Or any other book store app.

Unlike all other providers outside of Apple, Amazon has a complete ecosystem. That puts them in a position to lock out the competition.

btw, Kobo is in the Appstore. Maybe Amazon will delete it once the tablet is released; or maybe not.

The Prime membership would be pretty nice.

Are the missing apps not there because amazon excluded them or because the apps were never submited in the first place?

Why would you need an app for Hulu? Isn't it available via web browser?

My guess is that Amazon excluded them. Those apps are direct competition to services Amazon provides.

I meant to say Hulu Plus (entry updated).

Regular Hulu is not available on mobile devices and Hulu Plus is only available on select Android devices.

Watch Hulu Plus on select Android devices (subscription required).

Hulu Plus is available on the following devices: Nexus One, Nexus S, HTC Evo 4G, HTC Thunderbolt, HTC myTouch 4G, HTC Inspire 4G, G2, Motorola Droid II, Motorola Droid X and the Motorola Atrix. Support for additional devices will be announced throughout the year.

Edit- I got the following message when trying to access Hulu through the browser (Dolphin) on my Nook Color CM7:

Quote:
Hello!

We notice that you are trying to access Hulu from your Android. It's not available, but we are working hard to bring our Hulu Plus subscription service to this Android device! Stay tuned for updates.

Just added Zinio to the list. Amazon is currently in negotiations with magazine publishers to bring about a better selection of magazines.

With the impending announcement of Amazon's tablet and last weeks implementation of library lending for Kindle, I just discovered that OverDrive Media Console wasn't available in the Appstore. It's only available in Android Market.

I hope Amazon corrects this oversight and adds the app, as direct-to-device library lending is a major tablet feature.

Today is the day we may find out.

If the Amazon Kindle Tablet truly is "locked down" into a walled garden, I'm not going to be too impressed with it.
