Matilda: Empress, Queen, Warrior by Catherine Hanley has dropped to £4.99 at Kindle UK. This is pubbed by Yale Univ Press, and has a fair number of good reviews. I'm interested because the war between Matilda and Stephen formed the backdrop for one of my favorite murder mystery series, the Brother Cadfael series by Ellis Peters. I'm probably going to grab this one. £4.99 isn't a great price, but neither is it terrible for recent academic-ish non-fiction.

Anyway, here's the info...

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07PXNDR98

Spoiler:
Quote:
A life of Matilda—empress, skilled military leader, and one of the greatest figures of the English Middle Ages

Matilda was a daughter, wife, and mother. But she was also empress, heir to the English crown—the first woman ever to hold the position—and an able military general.

This new biography explores Matilda’s achievements as military and political leader, and sets her life and career in full context. Catherine Hanley provides fresh insight into Matilda's campaign to claim the title of queen, her approach to allied kingdoms and rival rulers, and her role in the succession crisis. Hanley highlights how Matilda fought for the throne, and argues that although she never sat on it herself her reward was to see her son become king. Extraordinarily, her line has continued through every single monarch of England or Britain from that time to the present day.

The Voyeur's Motel by Gay Talese is $1.99 at Amazon US.

I don't usually post reviews, but how could I not share this one:
Quote:
“This is a weird book about weird people doing weird things, and I wouldn’t have put it down if the house were on fire.” —John Greenya, Washington Times
Here's the synopsis
Quote:
The controversial chronicle of a motel owner who secretly studied the sex lives of his guests by the renowned journalist and author of Thy Neighbor’s Wife.

On January 7, 1980, in the run-up to the publication of his landmark bestseller Thy Neighbor’s Wife, Gay Talese received an anonymous letter from a man in Colorado. “Since learning of your long-awaited study of coast-to-coast sex in America,” the letter began, “I feel I have important information that I could contribute to its contents or to contents of a future book.” The man—Gerald Foos—hen divulged an astonishing secret: he had bought a motel outside Denver for the express purpose of satisfying his voyeuristic desires. Underneath its peaked roof, he had built an “observation platform” through which he could peer down on his unwitting guests.

Over the years, Foos sent Talese hundreds of pages of notes on his guests, work that Foos believed made him a pioneering researcher into American society and sexuality. Through his Voyeur’s motel, he witnessed and recorded the harsh effects of the war in Vietnam, the upheaval in gender roles, the decline of segregation, and much more.

Epic. Not enough to make me buy it, but maybe a Kindle sample.

Travels with Charley: In Search of America by John Steinbeck has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK. Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors, whether he's writing non-fiction or fiction.

These Penguin Modern Classics price drops don't usually last very long in the UK, so grab it if you want it. OTOH, they are really really rare (or never) in the US, so occasional and short is better than not at all .

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002RI9PO0

Spoiler:
Quote:
In 1960, John Steinbeck set out in his pick-up truck with his dog Charley to rediscover and chronicle his native USA, from Maine to California.

He felt that he might have lost touch with its sights, sounds and the essence of the American people. Moving through the woods and deserts, dirt tracks and highways to large cities and glorious wildernesses, Steinbeck observed - with remarkable honesty, insight and a humorous eye - the gamut of America and the people who inhabited it.

His 10,000-mile journey took him through almost forty states, where he saw things that made him proud, angry, sympathetic and elated. A rugged and passionate adventure of self-identity, Steinbeck's vision of the changing world still speaks to us prophetically through the decades.

'Delightful. This is a book to be read slowly for its savor.' The Atlantic

Found this today: The End of Policing. The e-book is completely free on the publisher's website! Free beats the $9.99 that Amazon is charging. It also beats the long library waitlist I was on for this e-book. The book is available in both Kindle and epub formats. It looks like the publisher is having a sale on some books, including this one, so if you're interested (especially in light of current events), I would snap this up now.

$5.99 is a bit high for bargain, but this book was published 2019 October 15 and since it is a "Great on Kindle" book, "Great on Kindle" credits can be applied to its purchase.
Today, it is on sale at $6.99 (deals of the day seem to be getting pricier lately), but still it is over 50% off and it is still in the "Great on Kindle" program, so there is that.

I read it a few months ago and highly recommend it.

This showed up as free on my Amazon feed and looks interesting:
The Idea of the Labyrinth from Classical Antiquity through the Middle Ages by Penelope Reed Doob

Quote:
Ancient and medieval labyrinths embody paradox, according to Penelope Reed Doob. Their structure allows a double perspective—the baffling, fragmented prospect confronting the maze-treader within, and the comprehensive vision available to those without. Mazes simultaneously assert order and chaos, artistry and confusion, articulated clarity and bewildering complexity, perfected pattern and hesitant process.

Thanks for this. In my amazon, the hardcover price for this shows up as $948 so this is quite a bargain.
