Input formats for ePub conversion?

I have just purchased a Plustek 3600 + book scanner, settled down for the long haul learning curve.
I am have managed to complete a couple of small books, editing them to RTF using Open Office.
I found that using ODT for transfering via calibre to my device they converted directly to EPub. Pleasing me no end.
I thought that it needed HTML to convert to EPub.
Will this place some limitation on future use of the book?

I thought I was in the conversions forum when submitting this.
Would some kind administrator please put this right. Thank You.

I don't understand the question. As long as the book looks like you want it to, ePub is ePub is ePub, regardless of your source format. As long as ePub is a suitable format for whatever you want to do with it, you'll be fine.

If you are already using Open Office Writer: Get the writer2epub plugin. Really good results for me (also converts those pesky DOC files)
