"à la française" vs Amazon
The French Do Buy Books. Real Books.
"Pamela Druckerman CONTRIBUTING OP-ED WRITER PARIS — One of the maddening things about being a foreigner in France is that hardly anyone in the rest of the world knows what’s really happening here. ...France, meanwhile, has just unanimously passed a so-called anti-Amazon law, which says online sellers can’t offer free shipping on discounted books. (“It will be either cheese or dessert, not both at once,” a French commentator explained..." more Perhaps the French should not allow any store, market or stall to occupy more than 200 square feet or have more than 50 different products or have more than 1 employee who would personally fetch, wrap, accept only cash and hand the customer their product that must be hand carried back to their residence. That would provide jobs for a multitude of shop workers. |

(Sigh)
Yup, Amazon took out all the Indie Book Stores in the US. Not Barnes and Nobles or Borders, Amazon. And they continue to diminish in number even though there are a multitude of reports that Indie Book Stores that are increasing in number and doing pretty well. Damn that evil Amazon |

I consider it appropriate that a country be able to determine it's own trading laws. If Amazon (or any other company) doesn't want to comply with the trading laws of France then they can cease to trade there.
