I highly recommend Red Light, even though it's the second in the series (I didn't think the other two in the series were as good) and Silent Joe, which has some really unusual characters and situations.

Also, the Whispersync/Audible companion book to Red Light is only $1.99.

Free from Wild Wolf Publishing Myra, Beyond Saddleworth by Jean Rafferty.

Quote:
LONG-LISTED FOR THE GUARDIAN NOT THE BOOKER PRIZE

After multiple unsuccessful appeals, infamous Moors Murderer, Myra Hindley died in prison...or did she?

What if the authorities lied?

What if the embarrassment from her constant appeals for release forced a deal and Hindley was granted a new secret identity? What sort of person would she have become? How would she live her life with her newfound freedom?

Myra, Beyond Saddleworth attempts to answer these questions in what is being considered the most controversial book in recent years. Not only does it explore questions of morality and personal responsibility, its feminist author engages with the uncomfortable suggestion that women can be just as violent and cruel as men.

‘A book that is both easy to read, and hard to read. Its exploration of the all-too-credible notion that dehumanisation is only human, is compelling and disturbing in equal measure.’ ~ Deborah Orr, The Guardian

‘Jean Rafferty is a remarkable writer with the bravery to explore the depths and the talent to take us with her.’ ~ Louise Welsh, author of The Cutting Room

About the author
Jean Rafferty is an award-winning journalist and non-fiction writer. Myra, Beyond
Quote:
The Moors murders were carried out by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley between July 1963 and October 1965, in and around what is now Greater Manchester, England. The victims were five children aged between 10 and 17—Pauline Reade, John Kilbride, Keith Bennett, Lesley Ann Downey and Edward Evans—at least four of whom were sexually assaulted.

Free from Oceanview Publishing - Blood Island by H. Terrell Griffin.

Quote:
Matt Royal never has to look far for excitement. Excitement-and sometimes trouble-has a way of finding him first. But for this fun-loving lawyer turned beach bum, things are about to get serious. Dead serious. When his ex-wife asks for help in tracking down her stepdaughter, last seen in Matt's hometown of Longboat Key, Matt agrees to do a little searching. But what looks like the case of one missing girl turns out to be something much bigger-and much more dangerous. Enlisting the aid of his buddies Jock Algren and Logan Hamilton, Matt launches a full-speed-ahead search that leads from Longboat Key to Key West to an ominous strip of land called Blood Island. But this is no island paradise. Blood Island is home base to a cult of religious zealots. And they're making devastating plans that could change the world forever.Bullets fly, and as the clock ticks down, it will be up to Matt to make sure that what happens on Blood Island stays on Blood Island.

The Complaints by Ian Rankin is $2.99 from Hachette. B&N Sony

Quote:
Nobody likes The Complaints--they're the cops who investigate other cops. It's a department known within the force as "The Dark Side," and it's where Malcolm Fox works. He's a serious man with a father in a nursing home and a sister who persists in an abusive relationship, frustrating problems about which he cannot seem to do anything.

Then the reluctant Fox is given a new case. There's a cop named Jamie Breck, and he's dirty. The problem is, no one can prove it. As Fox takes on the job, he learns that there's more to Breck than anyone thinks--dangerous knowledge, especially when a vicious murder takes place far too close to home.

In THE COMPLAINTS, Rankin proves again why he is one of the world's most beloved and bestselling crime writers, mixing unstoppable pacing with the deeper question of who decides right from wrong.

Free from Endeavor Press: The Case of the Antiquarian's Study (The Sebastian Symes Victorian Detective Series) by G.W. Colkitto.

Quote:
G.W Colkitto’s charming novella transports the reader back to the late nineteenth century, a world of gentleman detectives, ingenious thieves, bumbling constables, and cryptic mysteries.

A friend and sometimes rival of two of the best-loved characters in English literature - Dr Watson and Sherlock Holmes - the Sebastian Symes stories are a brilliant addition to the canon of British detective fiction.

In 'The Case of the Antiquarian’s Study', Sebastian Symes is invited by Sir James Bellamy to help with the excavation of a medieval chapel on his estate.

It is just the distraction Symes needs after his bruising encounter with the old- style London Rules fighter, Battling Billy Ford.

But will the promise of a quiet week out of London be as restful as Symes imagines? Not a chance.

The Antiquarian is found murdered in a locked room. The ancient treasure stolen.

With the help of Major Ritson and the local Constabulary, can Sebastian Symes solve the puzzle?

'The Case of the Antiquarian’s Study' is perfect for fans of Sherlock Holmes, Raffles and historical fiction.

G W Colkitto is an ardent Sherlock Holmes fan and former Bookshop owner, who writes both poetry and prose. He lives in Scotland.

Raven Black (Shetland Quartet 1) by Ann Cleeves is available for 74p on Amazon UK.

The third book in the series was recently an Amazon daily deal.

Quote:
Raven Black is the first book in Ann Cleeves’ Shetland series – which is now the major BBC1 drama starring Douglas Henshall, SHETLAND. It is a cold January morning and Shetland lies buried beneath a deep layer of snow. Trudging home, Fran Hunter’s eye is drawn to a vivid splash of colour on the white ground, ravens circling above. It is the strangled body of her teenage neighbour Catherine Ross. As Fran opens her mouth to scream, the ravens continue their deadly dance . . . The locals on the quiet island stubbornly focus their gaze on one man – loner and simpleton Magnus Tait. But when police insist on opening out the investigation a veil of suspicion and fear is thrown over the entire community. For the first time in years, Catherine’s neighbours nervously lock their doors, whilst a killer lives on in their midst. Also available in the Shetland series are White Nights, Red Bones, Blue Lightning and Dead Water. Ann Cleeves’ Vera Stanhope series (ITV television drama VERA) contains five titles, of which The Glass Room is the most recent.

Nearly ran to get it... then found it in my library (perhaps an old fictionwise or BoB purchase).

ETA: no, it was a Kindle purchase two+ years ago.. And I paid 2.99 plus tax. what a ripoff!

Free from Deadly Niche Press: Footprints of a Dancer: a detective Elliot Mystery by Bob Avey.

Quote:
Most of us come into this world with an inborn need for religion, a higher power to believe in. However, when fear and misunderstanding are the driving forces behind that desire, the result is rarely a good thing.

Eight years ago, Laura Bradford mysteriously disappeared off campus, causing quite a disturbance in the lives of Kenny Elliot and Gerald Reynolds, a journalism student with a fascination for Mesoamerican artifacts. When Gerald calls unexpectedly to tell Elliot he’s recently seen Laura then sets up a meeting only to be a no-show, Elliot tracks him down to get some answers. Instead he finds his old friend murdered in a ritualistic fashion.

Elliot takes a leave of absence from his job as a Tulsa police detective and launches an unofficial investigation, which leads him into the world of an Aztec deity with an appetite for blood.
