Grocery store research
A post in the "Who's on a diet?" thread got me to thinking.
So I was curious as to how the perimeter/edge of your favorite big grocery store is laid out. Is the bakery near the produce? |

The produce section is first when you walk in, with the cooked deli and cold deli areas on the left edge, the wine is sort of stuck in the middle, then the bakery is at the back. The wine section was moved a couple of years ago when the store added a "State Liquor" section that needs to be able to be gated.
Both the bakery and deli are pretty much awful. |

The store I shop at is produce, meats, dairy, bakery so produce and bakery are at opposite sides.
The store where I work is produce and bakery right as you walk in, meat across the back, and the other side is the convenience store side with the chips and soda and such. |

In the main regional chain in my area, the layout is not the same in every store. In the store closest to where I live, the bakery and deli are on one side of the store and the produce is on the opposite end of the store. In the next closest store to me, the bakery, deli, and produce are all at the same end of the store.

The stores I frequent are inconsistent regarding layout, although the produce is almost always close to the entrance.
Two large chains dominate the supermarket industry down here (i.e. it's a cartel), I mainly use them for household items, like detergent, floor wash, lavatory paper etc, and the smaller owner-operated ones for food. |

Where my mom lives in a town bigger than ours, though our region is the same population or more now, she has Walmart and HEB. Of course there are 9 HEB stores of varying sizes and selection. |

HEB is the largest grocery store chain in Texas.
Not to brag on them but when Harvey hit Houston, they had their portable kitchens set up long before Fema got there. They also had their stores except for one reopened within a day or two. They even brought in employees from other areas as soon as they found other employees that could house them. They also called the manufacturers and said they would buy all the groceries scheduled for Walmart and Krogers since those stores were still closed. Even before Harvey hit, they made sure their customers on the coast had bread, milk, water and tuna fish. They had employees doling out the groceries. Roughly 400 stores serving 155 communities. They are the largest private employer in TX. https://www.ksat.com/news/h-e-b-now-...0000-employees. |

They're not in El Paso, which explains why I've never heard of them before. |

I'm not saying they are the best store around because it is virtually impossible to find a parking place. We have 4 stores between Midland and Odessa. 2 are within the last couple of years. They are always packed. HEB if you are reading this, please build another store in Odessa. Remember your most recent store also picked up all the outlying small towns. We need one in the middle of town.

In the other thread someone wrote about what gets placed at the end of aisles in promo displays.
On Dec 27th one our 'big' two had a display of Easter (hot-cross) buns at the end of an aisle, which in itself I thought a bit weird; the day after folks finish celebrating the birth of Jesus they're being asked to commemorate his death. But the main reason I noticed was the gaggle of young teens discussing how many packets they should put into their trolley, which was already laden with mega size bottles of pop, bundles of huge chocolate bars, and bushels of choc-chip cookies and such. Interestingly none of the kids was overweight, quite the reverse in fact - maybe they were having a once-a-year binge. But worse than the layout of supermarkets is the labyrinthine layout of shopping centres (malls). They're specifically designed to ensure one passes every shop 3 times before one can find an exit, and the multi-storey centres force one to walk in circles past at least two rows of shops to get to the next escalator.
