Apple to get rid of DRM??

On the BBC web site: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7813527.stm

If Apple and iTunes get rid of their DRMs, could this be a trend-setter? (Please, oh please, say yes!)

Yup! See this link for details. In short:
  • Three price levels:
    • $.69 for the long-tail backlist items
    • $.99 for newer songs
    • $1.29 for the top-most hits (I'm unlikely to ever buy any of these...)
  • 8 Million songs DRM-free now; up to 10 Million+ (that is, all of them) in Spring.
  • 3G song downloads for iPhone customers

Finally, DRMed music makes no sense what so ever.

Music is Available in MP3 before you can buy it from Itunes most of the time for the people who want it.

DRM doesnt stop Pirates, It only Prevents Actual Users from using their product as they see fit.

The music industry and the book industry have been publishing on DRM free formats for many years... 50 or more for music... hundreds for books. Why they thing adding DRM will actually do anything to keep people from copying their stiff is beyond me.

Then again, there are enough DRM threads on this forum.

Actually it makes good sense for a lending library.

It cant be really a trend-setter, because Amazon has already had DRM free music, and Aapl is just following along. Having said that, they are asking for $0.30/song in existing library to convert to a non-drm format (although it is higher quality). That is a rip to have to repay a 1/3 of what you have already paid.

That's not true. The DRM free used to be more with iTunes plus. Then all iTunes plus tracks came down to 99¢.

But, now all will go DRM free... the price will depend on the publishers wishes. There will be a three tier pricing...

69¢, 99¢, $1.29 depending on if it is back catalog, current or popular. ALL three price tiers will be drm free.

Also it will still be AAC so you have to convert if you have non-Apple DMP.

Without DRM, we would not be able to "borrow" eBooks from the library. So in this case it is a good thing. But for general purchase, it's a bad thing.

Well it is only partially untrue in that AAPL did have some DRM free tunes for a premium price over the DRM titles whereas all the Amazon titles were MP3. The part about upgrading for $0.30 a pop is absolutely true.

Yes... that was quite a while ago. I believe though that the OP was referring to Today's announcement at MacWorld.

Well when you borrow from a Library you Are actually Leasing the item for X days, in this case DRM is called for

While in actually buying Music, You are led to believe you actually Own the Product, but in fact you are only Leasing it, and furtherences in technology can make it unsuable, or only be able to used as you see fit.

Amazon's best selling MP3 album of the year was ALSO released in a Creative Commons form (I saw this on The Long Tail http://www.longtail.com/the_long_tai...st-sellin.html)

So, stuff that was legally available for free was also the best selling. Wish publishers could get this spiked into their marketing minds.
