Red face Introductions Thread

There doesn't seem to be an introductions section on this forum, so I thought I'd start a thread for it:

Hi I'm Adam, more commonly known as Renchy. I'm from Australia and I'm an undergrad student studying a double degree in Science and Education.
I just ordered my Edge via the help of a contact in the US, and I'm pretty excited for when it arrives.

OK I'll go, everyone calls me Cheyenne, except my mother. I am an Education major, halfway through my courses. I have 2 daughters and 2 granddaughters. I love my edge, it has proven to be a valuable resource, almost replacing my netbook in school.

I'm Denise and finished my college education looong ago (BS Physics, BA Math/Statistics and minor in Chemistry). Four years was enough. I currently homeschool my two daughters, ages 10 & 11. I use my eDGe for reading some of my hobby books, which are pre-1900 children's books, slave literature, captivity stories, and anything that catches my interest .

I also surf the web with my eDGe, keeping up with way too many Yahoo groups and forums. I'm hoping that Dosbox for Android gets a major update soon, so I can play old DOS adventure games in my spare time, annoying my family further.

I'm interested in using eDGes for homeschooling, especially when we get to the classics. Buying one copy and having both students able to virtually mark up the books is appealing, as is using eDGes to write papers. But, as yet, finances do not allow buying two more eDGes.

I'm Sheri, a Southerner by birth but now a tried and true New Yorker. I'm an architect by education and profession, but also a writer and editor, which is what I've spent most of my career doing at magazines like Ms., Black Enterpise, Essence and others. I have three very mischevous children and a do-gooder husband.

I love my eDGe, too, and spend a lot of time reading classics, history, and sci-fi on it, as well as surfing the web and using it to take notes in meetings. Because much of what I do for my current job involves designing websites, the eDGe has proved to be valuable as a way to test how designs are rendered by the default Android browser. Websites that cost a lot (money, time, political chips) to design have to be built to render well in whatever will be in popular use three, four, five years from now. And I'm betting Android will be one of those things.

My name is Jake, a 3rd year Computer Science and Spanish Dual major in MN. I'm currently doing research at Carnegie Mellon University this summer, and I would like to get a PhD in the long-term.

I don't have an eDGe, but I really want one, and I would love to see the eDGe used as an academic paper reader/citation manager, along with all of it's other wonderful uses. Being a poor undergrad, I'm having trouble justifying the cost right now, but I have goals of getting and eDGe at some point, and when I do, if there's no software yet, I'll probably spend time writing my citation manager software.

I’m Matt, and my occupation is best described as a research assistant/bioinformatics specialist, working in cancer research. I graduated years ago but I want to go back for a PhD in my specific area of interest. I have no formal education in computers, but I have been interested since the days of DOS and love to tinker. I was a Palm OS user for more than a decade, starting in Middle School, and I still keep my Palm TX handy as a PDA.

I use my eDGe to store and read large study documents and reference materials, as well as check my mail and perform medical calculations when I am working (it helps that my whole institute is blanketed in WiFi). It’s not only more convenient that lugging my laptop around, it also is part of my effort to combat the MASSIVE waste of paper in this industry. The eDGe now more or less replaces knee high stacks of printouts, as well as pen and pad for me entirely when I attend meetings. In my off time I use it to read epub and PDF books, read "homemade" epub "newspapers," I check out new titles digitally from my local library, and I watch movies and TV shows I record (capture card) and convert on my desktop PC.

Part of why I like the eDGe so much is that I like to do things my way with technology. So naturally I despise all things DRM, cellular-carrier meddling in devices, and pretty much most products and services coming from a certain “fruit company. Similarly, Amazon remotely removing a book from the Kindle by force last year pretty much sealed it for me that I would not get any product with that type of connection.

I'm Aidren, from Vancouver, BC. I'm a retired designer/copywriter from the print advertising/marketing world. I'm interested in esoteric philosopy/religion, theology and ancient religions, etc., and am a student/practitioner of Taijiquan. When I read/study I tend to use a plethora of coloured tags and sticky notes and then find when I seek the book for reference, a year later, I don't remember what they were for! Hence, my addiction to notes and annotations in ebooks.

I've been watching the ereader market for about a year and half and just couldn't justify the cost for something I could only read on. I had great hopes for the iPad and was hugely disappointed when it debuted, so began my search again. Enter Entourage. Finally, someone had the foresight to put reading, study and research in one package.

My name is Walt. I'll be starting a PhD Economics program in the fall. I've just completed a MA Economics at another university (actually received the eDGe from my wife as a combination birthday/graduation gift last month). In between undergrad and graduate school, I worked for a number of years as a purchasing agent for an electrical contractor--decent money, but I was bored out of my mind and started couldn't stop worrying about being laid off, so I resigned in 2008 to earn my MA (while taking as much Math as a possibly could) in order to get myself in a position to get a funded offer from a Top 30(ish) Economics program. My research interests lie at the intersection of economics and political science (my undergraduate major), so my fields of specialization will be some flavor of applied micro and public. I have absolutely no interest in finance or macro (I want to study a social science, not theology). My funding for years 2-4 comes from a US Department of Education grant (thank you to all the hardworking taxpayers out there), which will focus my research on Economics of Education (which was actually the topic of my MA thesis). My goal is to complete the PhD and be a university professor.

In August, I'll celebrate my 5th anniversary with my wife and we will have known each other for 12 years in September (we met first day of college). No kids, but we do have 4 cats. She is a high school French teacher. The toughest part about starting the PhD program in the midwest is that she will be staying in California because her job out here is tenured, while the current state fiscal crisis makes finding a teacher job all but impossible. Hopefully she'll be able to join me next year. No kids yet, but we do have 4 cats.

Hi Sheri,

My name is Ken and I am also designing websites at this time... I am curious how the eDGe works with APPs.

I am seriously thinking about purchasing the Entourage EdGe as my new workstation. I create simple Flash-based websites for my clients. I use a lot of simple APPs. If I could get the EdGe to act as a workstation server for APPs which are running on the Internet “Server Side, it would fit the bill.

Since I don’t have the EdGe yet, I cannot test it with the APPs. I was wondering if you would be so kind as to try the following APPs and see if they will run on the EdGe. Your help would greatly be appreciated. Based upon the EdGe Forum, you seem to be one of the more Advanced users…

There is an application on the Internet called " www.Wix.com " .... it is a website creation tool which runs in the "Cloud"... All of the app runs from the Internet side.... Do you know if this can work using the Edge with the new flash upgrades.

There also is a server side app - (owned by google) it is at www.picnik.com. It is a powerful photo editor which runs from the server side. The Edge would simply work as a client/remote internet workstation.

There also is a "Cloud" app called "Glide OS"... It can be reached at www.GlideOS.com -- it is server based and the APP runs from the Internet.

In summary:

Could you please test the following APPs -->

1. www.WIX.com
2. www.PICNIK.com
3. www.GlideOS.com

Can you test these apps... I am really looking to retire my Acer 18.4" laptop and go with a edge if it will do the trick...

Thanks in advance,

Ken J. Brose

P.S. You can contact me at " thebaron0007@gmail.com " ... Thanks...
