Chinese on e-ink screen
Has any one succeeded in reading Chinese or Japanese epub files on the e-ink screen?
Reading Chinese content on e-ink was one of my main reason to use eDGe, but so far I can only use Android applications to read Chinese on the LCD. The Chinese epub books I downloaded from gutenberg.org showed only the title in Chinese on the e-ink screen. Their Chinese contents were displayed as "????". This seems to be an Adobe reader problem, appearing also on my PC, while Mobipocket reader is able to display the same Chinese epub book. I hope enTourage will find a solution to this problem soon, and/or allow 3rd party Android applications to display content on the e-ink screen. Thanks. |

Very glad to hear somebody using in Chinese.
Did you know the Android part already has Chinese font build-in? Or, how to change the system font to Chinese? |

I have many pdfs in both BIG5 and GB. Virtually all of them are rendered correctly on the e-ink screen. Some have the problem you described, with characters showing up as "???". More likely than not, the fonts or encoding info are missing or missing in the file.

Some PDF files have the fonts embedded in them, and in this case all languages are supported. For PDFs and ePUBs where the enTourage eDGe has to provide the fonts, the following languages are supported: Brazilian Portuguese Chinese Simplified Chinese Traditional Dutch English French German Italian Japanese Korean Portuguese Spanish More languages will be added with software updates in the future. |

We are aware of the issue regarding reading Chinese books from Project Gutenberg - it is an issue with Adobe. We are working to resolve it in a future software update.

I can provide much more description of Chinese on E-ink screen problems
I used entourage eDGe (10") before and just received my new pocket eDGe yesterday.
Not every Chinese epub files can be displayed correctly on E-ink screen. But every epub which I converted from the LCD screen CAN NOT display properly on E-ink scree. (By the "View on Reader" function.) All the chinese words replaced by "?" and it's really bother me... We both know use the E-ink for reading is much comfortable but without SDK or other firmware solution, there is No other way can let me read webpage on E-ink.... I'm not sure it is the problem of font because I have the same problem on Nook.. And I modify the epub by adding a CSS to solve the problem <-- It is a VERY STUPID method... I hope this problem can be fixed as soon as possible, thanks!! If entourage needs much more details of these problems, I can provide some samples to you. |

Welcome to the forums, sunnyone
The issue of fonts, etc., is a long standing one, and I don't remember seeing a public response by enTourage about their plans to address this. If you contact Tech Support directly (www.entourageedge.com/support), you may be able to get some detailed information from them about this. |

Welcome to the forums, seagal
That's an excellent tip! If anyone is wondering how to do that, make a copy of th EPUB file and change the file extension to '.zip'. Then unzip the contents, find and change the file as requested, re-zip, and then change the extension back to EPUB. Note that I don't think this will work on DRM-protected (paid-for) EPUBs because of encryption. |
