$8M rare book heist

This story was in my local rag this morning...I linked to a different site so as to not broadcast my city.

https://triblive.com/local/allegheny...are-book-heist

"For 25 years, Greg Priore was responsible for watching over the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s rarest and oldest collections.

By the time the library fired Priore in 2017, detectives say he had helped smuggle, destroy and sell more than $8 million worth of rare books he was responsible for protecting."

Of course not. That would qualify as cruel and unusual PUNishment.

I just don't understand how someone could cut up a rare book. Stealing it, sure, selling it, less so but cutting up individual pages? That's almost a sin.

Maybe there was no good enough document cameras around back then, so, he opted for a flatbed scanner instead

If you see an old-fashioned looking framed print of a fruit or flower on someone's wall, there's a good chance that if came from someone cutting up books such as this:

As long as you legitimately own it, and it's not one of the last copies in the world -- fine with me.

Unless I missed it, we're only hearing the police/prosecution side at this point. I hope the defendants are innocent in fact, and in the final determination of the court, although I realize the pre-trial publicity sounds alarming.

Sure, I've seen covers of books used as art but I find something offensive about ripping out pages. As long as it's yours, sure but still....and rare at that.

So far, the evidence looks pretty damning and the guy basically admitted to it. We'll see how the court case shakes out.

Considering that he has admitted to doing it for the money and implicated the bookshop owner I would suggest that he is guilty.

Somehow I don't think that those two things account for all 8.1 million. Certainly while education isn't cheap there are ways to save money by a less expensive school and a less expensive house wouldn't have killed him. Of course now he'll be the one getting the education (in the judicial process) and he'll likely have no worries about housing for a few yrs either.

Can I just say how disappointed I am with this topic? On a small screen, I read the title as S&M rare book heist.

1 star, item not as described. Can I get my money back please?
