Sequel to The Shining

... in the works. Entire blurb reads :

It's now official--Stephen is working on Dr. Sleep, the sequel to The Shining. This weekend Steve read an excerpt from this at his appearance at George Mason University. They have given us permission to post their taping of the event here on Steve's site which we will do as soon as we receive the file. Dr. Sleep's plot includes a traveling group of vampires called The Tribe which is part of the passage he read from.

Boy, that sounds ... terrible. But I guess it's a weeeee bit too early to judge.

I was there on Friday night, and saw/heard him do this reading. I'm a HUGE Stephen King so I loved it. I could have sat there and listened to him all night. He did an excellent speech, very humorous and entertaining.

So is this going to be a cross-over? Perhaps we'll discover that vampires are the mature form of corpses buried in old Indian burial grounds?

Sounds interesting, but then I am a long time Stephen King fan. I've got a copy of the Bachman books including "Rage" which he pulled from publication some yrs ago. With real life tragedies like Columbine he didn't want to be accused of giving any kids additional ideas.

I'm more than willing to give this one a fair shot. He's always been known for throwing out the occasional "clunker" (even his most die-hard fans accept this), so another one wouldn't be any huge surprise. But he almost always bounces back from such lackluster efforts, so even if this one turns out to be atrocious, it would be silly to see it as a sign of King "losing it" or "needing to retire."

After all these years, I'm still anxiously awaiting 11/22/63.

I don't know. The only thing that we can say for sure is that his vampires don't sparkle.

Aren't all Stephen King's books cross-overs?
Spoiler:
At the very least they all lie in shadow of the Dark Tower, yes?

He writes the same as he always has; which is to say a lot. Some crap gets in the mix, but most of it is good, and a lot of it is great, and some of it is phenomenal.

I admire his early work a lot. Possibly the least appreciated, and most maligned books of their time. The man loves to write. He genuinely doesn't care about money at this point; he just can't stop writing. He's stated before that for him, the choice is either write or kill himself. He has that luxury now, but I'm only going to read his non-fiction/literary commentary, because his fiction magic ran out 20 years ago, imo.

I have tons of respect for the guy. He's a writer in the truest sense, but I'll skip his new fiction.
