Brian Jacques has passed away.

http://shelf-life.ew.com/2011/02/07/...dwall-dies-71/

I don't know if this was posted before, but I just found the story on the news tonight.

He was an inspiration and one of my favorite authors growing up.

Quote:
A former merchant sailor whose children's books sold millions worldwide has died aged 71.

Brian Jacques' Redwall series of books were translated into 29 languages and sold 20m globally.

He first wrote the series, set in an abbey populated by animals, for children at the Royal Wavertree School for the Blind in Liverpool.

The Liverpool-born writer's weekly show, Jakestown, ran on BBC Radio Merseyside for more than 20 years.

He died after a heart attack at the weekend and leaves a wife and two grown up sons.

Literary talent
Mr Jacques grew up near to the docks in Liverpool and when he left school at 15, travelled the world as a merchant seaman.

In the sixties, with his two brothers, he formed a folk group called The Liverpool Fishermen.

He wrote 21 novels in the Redwall series, which were also turned into a TV series and an opera.

Some critics compared them to JRR Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings and Watership Down by Richard Adams.

Even as a child he showed literary talent.

He was caned by a teacher who could not believe that a 10-year-old could write so well when he penned a short story about a bird who cleaned a crocodile's teeth.

Sad news. I loved Mossflower and Redwall as a kid, and a few more after that before I grew out of them. Never realised it had grown to such a huge series, or that there was an opera and tv series!

I hadn't a clue he was even that old. Well, at least his family will be well taken care of. At least for the next 70 years anyway...

He was one of my favorite authors as a kid, and I kept up with the Redwall series to this day. Reading the final novel this year will be bittersweet.

It's sad to see another great author pass away.

This is sad news.

I met him when he came to my school to discuss his books. I was 10 at the time, and generally only interested in reading Goosebumps, Fear Street, etc. After meeting him & listening to him read some pages from Mattimeo I decided to give one of his books a try. Since then he's always been one of my favorite authors. Even now, as an adult, I still enjoy reading the Redwall series. He was a wonderful writer and storyteller.

It is sad, particularly since at age 71, he might have had a few books left in him... Still, having a series of more than 20 books that will probably remain in print for decades to come is not a bad legacy to leave behind. Here is hoping it remains in public memory until it enters the public domain.
