Converted Books Margins Stay White in Override Colors
Hi,
Using PDF X-Change Editor to read a o=converted PDF. Have made many conversions of other books. Last conversion, when I override the colors so that I can change the white background to a more eye-friendly darker color, only the page body and not the margins respect the color change. So, I have an all-white margin, while all the parts of the page with tex DO get the background color change. What do you think is happening? Previously converted books don't have this issue. Thanks! Hi Kovid,
Ah! What I meant was, after I convert a file to PDF, using my PDF viewer's Preferences > Accessibility will normally change the entire background of any Calibre-created PDF. Recently, converting files to PDF via Calibre, the resulting PDF, when applying the background change, ONLY converts the center of the page - the area under the text. The margins just stay white. Wha do you think may be happening? Sincerely, Blaine |

The margin area is rendered separately when generating PDF in calibre for technical reasons. Presumably your reader does not support changing the backgrounds in a such a case.

Hi Kovid,
Yeah - that's what's so strange. For a few years I've been using the same program, PDF X-Change Editor, and good old Calibre. Always worked before. Only just started to have this margins issue. Like, just now, used http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/730 and convereted to MOBI to PDF. Same thing. Which is what's so confusing. It used to work. For several years. Is there any change to Calibre you can think of that could be influencing this? Or, any setting I may have inadvertently altered? Sincerely, Blain |

Its because the PDF engine was completely changed in calibre 4 (the technical reasons I was referring to earlier)

Hi Kovid,
Ah! I see, I see, I see. From the overhaul of the PDF engine. How do you see things from here - is it an issue that can be ironed out? And, again, THANK YOU for Calibre. It is BEYOND brilliant. When I see how kindly you share your technical skill to help people I feel impressed. Thank you, Kovid. Sincerely, Blaine |

Sadly, no. The two pass rendering is required by limitations of the new engine, I dont see a way to avoid it.

Hi Kovid,
Just to confirm, upper image is older converted file with background change set to dark. Lower is newer version. This is probably being caused by the two pass rendering requirement of the the new engine: https://imgur.com/2RlIn7U. Am I right? Many thanks, Blaine Last edited by Blaineoreski; 05-08-2020 at 09:45 AM. |
