Kevin and the Can
Kevin ... dear Kevin, he is one of my rescues from Hurricane Katrina. He looked like a little alien creature when I first got him, and he's still a little different than the other cats ... smarter.
Soon after he came to live here, I noticed that the pantry cabinets were being left open. I knew I wasn't doing it ... and I'm the only one with opposable thumbs in this house, so I suspected it was one of the cats. Then I saw Kevin, in the pantry, running up and flinging himself against one of the pantry cabinet doors. When the door would bounce back ... just a little ... he'd get his paw in behind it ... and viola ... open door. A bit later, I started noticing empty pop top cans of Fancy Feast cat food scattered around the kitchen and pantry. The cats were getting themselves snacks?? After that, I walked into the kitchen to find Kevin with his front foreleg pressing down on the back side of a can, while with his other paw he was moving the pop top tab into a raised position. Then, he took his claws and zipped the cover back. Hey, presto ... open can. Now, I have gate locks on all of the pantry cabinets. I watch Kevin as he studies them ... I know he's working on a way to lift those locks so he can once again have access to his favorite hobby ... driving his poor human mother completely crazy. |

Cute story! You need to write his collected antics into a book!

Kevin, the evil genius cat. You should sleep with a loaded gun ricky. But then you live in Teaxs, so that would be natural.

Quote:
Brian, for example. Brian came to me after some crackheads had stuffed him in a bag and bashed him against a concrete wall. Every bone in his body was broken and he had severe brain damage. So, naturally, the vet who found him (bloody on the doorstep of the clinic -- still in the bag), asked me to take him. He was having seizures every few minutes, so I had him in a kennel cage for his first few weeks, just to make sure he didn't hurt himself. One day, I took out his litterbox so that I could clean it. As I was bringing it back to put in the cage, I noticed that Brian had gone to the bathroom on the cage floor where the litterbox would normally go. I put the box down and went back into the kitchen to get some Lysol to clean the cage. As I returned, I saw Brian looking around the cage with great perplexity (I hope that's a word). His eyes hit the small scratching post and you could see the lightbulb going off .... He then took both paws, wrapped them around the post and dragged it over the spot where the poop and pee was sitting. Not quite ... lift it up a tech ... and then pull .... right, now it's all covered. He turned to me an flashed me a little kitty smile. Ah, Brian. He's still a little socially challenged, but he hasn't had a seizure in years, and he's quite the idiot savant. |
