FREE - How Should We Then Live? -- Francis A Schaeffer
Quote:
AudioFile Earphones Award Winner

As one of the foremost evangelical thinkers of the twentieth century, Francis Schaeffer long pondered the fate of declining Western culture. In this brilliant book he analyzed the reasons for modern society’s state of affairs and presented the only viable alternative: living by the Christian ethic, acceptance of God’s revelation, and total affirmation of the Bible’s morals, values, and meaning.

How Should We Then Live?
has become the benchmark for Christian worldview thinking today. This edition commemorates the 50th anniversary of L’Abri Fellowship, founded by Francis and Edith Schaeffer.

The Pastor's Kid: Finding Your Own Faith and Identity
by Barnabas Piper

at BN.com

The Only One Facing As Much Pressure As the Pastor is ... The Pastor’s Kid

Dad may be following God’s call, but the Pastor’s kids (PKs) are just following mom and dad. Often to devastating results.

Barnabas Piper – son of Pastor and bestselling author John Piper – has experienced the challenges of being a PK first-hand. With empathy, humor, and personal stories, he addresses the pervasive assumptions, identity issues and accelerated scrutiny PKs face.

But more than just stating the problems – he shares the one thing a PK needs above all else (as do their pastor/father and church) is to live in true freedom and wholeness.

Saint Francis of Assisi: A Life Inspired

repost from August 31 in August thread.

Saint Francis of Assisi: A Life Inspired, by Wyatt North, free at Amazon US, reportedly to September 3.

Book Description
Publication Date: July 23, 2014
Quote:
St. Francis’s call is a call to return to the basics of Christianity. It is a call to Christians to reach back to their roots so that their spiritual lives can draw strength from the pure waters of the Gospel instead of being choked by manmade traditions and worldly concerns. In the words of G. K. Chesterton, the coming of Francis “marked the moment when men could be reconciled not only to God but to nature and, most difficult of all, to themselves. … his whole function [was] to tell men to start afresh and, in that sense, to tell them to forget” (124).

While St. Francis of Assisi is one of the most beloved saints in history, the relevancy of St. Francis for our times in light of the election of Pope Francis has yet to be explored. This book is written with the intention of filling that gap. While it is biographical in nature, it also freely explores themes that relate to St. Francis but are not a part of his life. This book is about more than the life of St. Francis of Assisi; it is about the impact this beloved saint has had through his imitation of Christ, his love of poverty, the Franciscan movement, and his profound influence on Pope Francis.

Absolute Monarchs: A History of the Papacy by John Julius Norwich

$1.99 at Amazon US

Quote:
In a chronicle that captures nearly two thousand years of inspiration and intrigue, John Julius Norwich recounts in riveting detail the histories of the most significant popes and what they meant politically, culturally, and socially to Rome and to the world. Norwich presents such popes as Innocent I, who in the fifth century successfully negotiated with Alaric the Goth, an invader civil authorities could not defeat; Leo I, who two decades later tamed (and perhaps paid off) Attila the Hun; the infamous “pornocracy”—the five libertines who were descendants or lovers of Marozia, debauched daughter of one of Rome’s most powerful families; Pope Paul III, “the greatest pontiff of the sixteenth century,” who reinterpreted the Church’s teaching and discipline; John XXIII, who in five short years starting in 1958 instituted reforms that led to Vatican II; and Benedict XVI, who is coping with today’s global priest sex scandal. Epic and compelling, Absolute Monarchs is an enthralling history from “an enchanting and satisfying raconteur” (The Washington Post).

I can testify as to this being a good book. I just got through listening to it, having bought the Kindle ebook and the audiobook as a Whispersync.

A book on this subject could easily be dry, but this one is not. The author does a great job of making the facts interesting. Also, he does not cover every pope, but mainly those that he deems more significant. He brings in concomitant history related to the pontiffs when discussing them.

It's a good listen, and I'm sure it is a good read, too.

B&H Academic has another selection for $.99, Interpreting Gospel Narratives: Scenes, People, and Theology by Timothy Wiarda.

Quote:
The night of his arrest, Jesus spoke to his close followers about two testimonies that would focus on Him: the work of the Holy Spirit and their own personal accounts. Interpreting Gospel Narratives looks exclusively at the testimony given in the Gospels, exploring several ways to enrich our Gospel exegesis so that we may see Christ as clearly as possible.

Timothy Wiarda’s book is primarily how-to, discussing questions of exegetical method that will help interpreters and expositors work with Gospel texts. He also discusses methodological questions relating specifically to the narrative material in the Gospels and focuses in on other fine details—the portrayal of individual characters, descriptive elements, the relation between theology and story, and more.

. . . .
Thanks for the post. Great find!

I'm on the Bookstore's mailing list and probably have gotten an email about the sale, but I haven't been able to keep up the last few days with checking all of my emails. Who knows if I would have seen the announcement.

Forced to live with her mother until she can find work on Capitol Hill that does not involve her gregarious ex-husband, her efforts are stymied until she learns that she has inherited a funeral home in picturesque Mt. Dora. Jennifer journeys to the small Florida town with her two sons and her mother, never dreaming that within a mortuary she will discover she has inherited a rewarding career that teaches her far more about life than death.

Here are a couple more bargains from B&H. They should be couponable at Kobo, but it looks like the coupons codes have dried up for the moment. I'll link Christianbook instead, where these (and other B&H books) are DRM-free.

Christian Doctrine by Walter T. Conner is the latest $.99 deal from B&H Academics. It's from 1937, but it's still in print and used as a textbook in theology courses at conservative seminaries.

The Apologetics Study Bible is $5.99.
