Kindle couple breaks up - is there a way to divide the purchased books?

Guy reads on iPhone. Girl reads on Kindle she got as a gift from guy - REGISTERED TO HIS ACCOUNT. He buys thrillers and a few computer books. She buys (and downloads when they're free) historical novels and the occasional travel book. They couldn't care less about each other's books - but they're on the same account.

Fast forward a year. He's gone - but the device is still registered to him. If she buys books through the device, they'll go on his account and he'll pay for them. Obviously not what she wants. But if she deregisters her device and registers it to her own account, won't she lose all her books?

Is there a better way to go about it, that hopefully does not involve getting in touch with him again?

As I understand it, if she deregisters it and registers it to a new account the books already on her Kindle will still be there and readable, but she'll never be re-download them. So the books will last the life of her current Kindle, but no longer.

A couple of options:

Firstly, download the books to a PC and strip the DRM off, then back them up. Disadvantage: illegal, and she needs to be reasonably computer literate.

Secondly: contact guy and get him to create a new acccount too. Keep the old account that they both can re-register too when they need to download old books. Disadvantage: she needs to get back in touch with him, and get him to agree to this hassle of a plan that has no advantages for him.

Hope this helps!

I am not asking for the technical details, but - can this be done by copying the files from the Kindle to the PC, without knowing the guy's Amazon password, or would she need to install the PC Kindle software, for which she would probably need the password?

Also: can this even be done? Last time I looked at a thread about this subject, I think I saw an explanation about Amazon having several different types of DRM, and not all of them being possible to remove. I might be wrong about this.

Is it an original Kindle? In which case, no problem. Copy them to a PC, and used the available tools to get the PID of the Kindle and decrypt them.

Is it a Kindle 2? In which case, has it been updated to the latest firmware (>=2.5)? If not, no problem, method as for original Kindle

If it's a Kindle 2 with firmware >=2.5, only books that were downloaded to it before the upgrade to firmware 2.5 happened can currently be decrypted, same method as for original Kindle.

If it's a Kindle 3, you're out of luck. there's currently no method of removing DRM from ebooks with DRM downloaded to a Kindle 3.

NB Not all books from Amazon have DRM — she might be lucky with some of them.

She could try writing to Amazon Customer Services, but even if they agreed to move some books to a new account, they'd certainly have to contact and get agreement from her old boyfriend, as it's his account that the books would be being removed from.

It depends. Not illegal if the DRM prevents read-aloud and there are no other available ebook editions that do allow read-aloud. Otherwise the legality of DRM removal is undecided.

Another reason why DRM should be stripped from books immediately after purchase. It would eliminate this problem!

That's what I would say too Tom. Sorry OP. The easiest answer I can see for you is to get somebody to assist you in liberating the books of DRM and just storing them on your own computer.

They will of course be readable on your current Kindle for as long as that Kindle is operational ... even if you deregister from the Amazon account and re-register on a new account, unless you delete the file from the Kindle it doesn't matter the books will be readable. As long as you have a copy of the file, you can read the book on the Kindle. Your biggest problem will be when that Kindle goes kaput on you, and they all do eventually. You won't be able to read that specific file on a new device.

You can attempt to contact Amazon, but I have never heard of anybody being successful in getting them to move books to a new Amazon account - and certainly not without bringing your ex into the picture to get his permission.

I hope you find a way to keep your books.
