Combined ratings from Amazon and GoodReads (where there are a lot more) are good, but not great.

This is a very interesting subject to me. Thanks for posting the ebook!

The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe is $2.99 at Amazon.com.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00139XSBA

Quote:
From "America's nerviest journalist" (Newsweek)--a breath-taking epic, a magnificent adventure story, and an investigation into the true heroism and courage of the first Americans to conquer space. "Tom Wolfe at his very best" (The New York Times Book Review)

Millions of words have poured forth about man's trip to the moon, but until now few people have had a sense of the most engrossing side of the adventure; namely, what went on in the minds of the astronauts themselves - in space, on the moon, and even during certain odysseys on earth. It is this, the inner life of the astronauts, that Tom Wolfe describes with his almost uncanny empathetic powers, that made The Right Stuff a classic.

I think that the moderators frown on making a post just to thank or praise a poster for a post; there may even be a rule against it. So I'm forced to have more to say.

I am a "car guy," and the cover of the Havana book reminded me of something interesting. Before the embargo(?) by the U.S., Cubans bought quite a number of U.S. automobiles. After the embargo started, they had no source for parts to repair them, but through ingenuity, etc. they managed, for the most part I think, to keep their American automobiles going. It would be interesting to know how many Americans have made trips recently to find and buy models that are hard to find now in the U.S. I would love to go there myself--there are a couple of models, that are hard to find now in the U.S., that I would love to acquire. No doubt some Cubans have become nouveau rich from selling their cars (mostly 1950's models, I think) to Americans and others. It will be interesting to see if the Havana book has anything to say about the subject!

Thanks, again, for your posts of the Charles River ebooks, and your kindness in providing links for Americans, so that we don't have to go through the trouble of creating them ourselves!

Great, timely find!

The book was published almost exactly 2 months after the Ethiopian Airlines crash, when it quickly became apparent that that crash and the previous 737Max crash were related. I suppose that, given the ability to rapidly publish ebooks, something about the problem might have made it into the ebook, but it's highly unlikely, IMHO.

In the Shadow of the Sword: The Birth of Islam and the Rise of the Global Arab Empire by Tom Holland has dropped to $4.99, not a great price, but not terrible either for history/non-fiction. I read and enjoyed Holland's Persian Fire a while back, so will probably buy and read this one.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005IEGKMA
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/in-...of-the-sword-1

Spoiler:
The acclaimed author of Rubicon and other superb works of popular history now produces a thrillingly panoramic (and incredibly timely) account of the rise of Islam.

No less significant than the collapse of the Roman Republic or the Persian invasion of Greece, the evolution of the Arab empire is one of the supreme narratives of ancient history, a story dazzlingly rich in drama, character, and achievement. Just like the Romans, the Arabs came from nowhere to carve out a stupefyingly vast dominion—except that they achieved their conquests not over the course of centuries as the Romans did but in a matter of decades. Just like the Greeks during the Persian wars, they overcame seemingly insuperable odds to emerge triumphant against the greatest empire of the day—not by standing on the defensive, however, but by hurling themselves against all who lay in their path.

Mommie Dearest by Christina Crawford is $1.99 today:

I was interested to see that it’s listed as an eTextbook (presumably not on child care).

Salt: A World History
by Mark Kurlansky

is $1.99 at U.S. stores

Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...api_tkin_p1_i0

Kobo: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/salt-13

Below is the blurb:
An unlikely world history from the bestselling author of Cod and The Basque History of the World

In his fifth work of nonfiction, Mark Kurlansky turns his attention to a common household item with a long and intriguing history: salt. The only rock we eat, salt has shaped civilization from the very beginning, and its story is a glittering, often surprising part of the history of humankind. A substance so valuable it served as currency, salt has influenced the establishment of trade routes and cities, provoked and financed wars, secured empires, and inspired revolutions. Populated by colorful characters and filled with an unending series of fascinating details, Salt is a supremely entertaining, multi-layered masterpiece.

Written in History: Letters that Changed the World by Simon Sebag Montefiore has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK. Glancing at the sample, this strikes me as similar to two books I really liked in DTB that are not available in ebook at the moment: Eyewitness to History by John Carey, and Eyewitness to America: 500 Years of American History in the Words of Those Who Saw It Happen by David Colbert. So I may give this one a try...

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07D6RH1FQ

Spoiler:
Quote:
WRITTEN IN HISTORY celebrates the great letters of world history, creative culture and personal life. Acclaimed historian Simon Sebag Montefiore selects over one hundred letters from ancient times to the twenty-first century: some are noble and inspiring, some despicable and unsettling; some are exquisite works of literature, others brutal, coarse and frankly outrageous; many are erotic, others heartbreaking. The writers vary from Elizabeth I, Rameses the Great and Leonard Cohen to Emmeline Pankhurst, Mandela, Stalin, Michelangelo, Suleiman the Magnificent and unknown people in extraordinary circumstances - from love letters to calls for liberation, declarations of war to reflections on death. In the colourful, accessible style of a master storyteller, Montefiore shows why these letters are essential reading: how they enlighten our past, enrich the way we live now - and illuminate tomorrow.
