One option that has not been mentioned is a Nokia N800/N810. The N810 may be out of your price range, but it has a daylight readable LCD screen. There is a Palm emulator that may allow you to use your existing PDA software. There is no DRMed ebook support, but FBReader is a very good multi-format DRM-free ebook reader and some have reported reading PDFs is also ok (even on the small screen). The screen is about the best you are going to get in a pocketable device, and you can surf the web on it (WiFi again).
