Flaubert, Gustave: Three Tales etc, v1, 7 Oct 2007.

Gustave Flaubert: ‘Three Tales’ and ‘The Dance of Death’.
[Trois Contes (1877) and The Dance of Death (1838)]

The Three Tales are:

1. A Simple Soul
(Un Coeur Simple)
The life of a simple, affectionate and loyal servant-woman, who has no-one to love.
This is the story that inspired Julian Barnes to write his novel, ‘Flaubert’s Parrot’ (which won the Booker Prize in 1984)..

2. The Legend of Saint Julian the Hospitaller
(La Légende de Saint Julien L’Hospitalier)
Flaubert’s hagiography is an attempt to give an insight into medieval thoughts and feelings. An accidental parricide finds redemption.

3. Herodias
(Hérodias)
A retelling of the last hours of John the Baptist.

And I have added the brief prose-poem, ‘The Dance of Death’. This is a dialogue between Death, Satan and the emperor Nero.

This is my first attempt at a multi-level TOC. I have restored accents and added a picture.
